Boxing is one of the most physically demanding sports in existence. It isn't uncommon for a boxer to train many times a day for weeks on end. Such strict workout regiments are often accompanied by special training equipment, not to mention necessary safety equipment to keep a boxer safe before the big fight.

Of the most basic safety equipment, the mouthpiece and multiple types of hand gear. Hand gear is very important, as knuckles and other locations around the hand will become seriously damaged in no time at all. Thus, padding and a firm grip can help nullify such injuries, which can be devastating when trying succeed in a real boxing match. Mouthpieces, groin guards, and headgear is also quite common for sparring matches.

When a boxer is in the training process, it's important for the boxer to obtain superior hand eye coordination and speed. To gain expertise in both fields, its best to train with the speed bag. The speed bag is a lightweight type of bag that can move around in often unpredictable locations- meaning coordination and the rule of keeping one's hands up will both be improved.

Heavier bags are excellent for both beginning boxers and veteran boxers alike. A beginning boxer will be taught the key locations to strike a heavy bag, which is used to imitate a human body. Veterans can use the heavy bag for practicing punching maneuvers, techniques, and to practice heavy body shots that can disable an opponent if landed correctly. The heavy back also doubles over as a bag used for practicing combination moves, which make use of several different punching or kicking techniques.

Modern technology has made it possible for the "slam man" punching bag, or what is otherwise called a human shaped bag. This bag is shaped in the form of a human, and is made of synthetic materials that act and react much like a human body would to a punch. This can give the "real feel" when sparring with the bag, meaning training can benefit much more as a result. A slam man may be more expensive on average, but it is well worth the money in learned expertise.

It's a good overview, but I don't know how much is necessary for a real beginner. A novice will be 4-6 months away from sparring, and really only needs a good pair of handwraps, shoes, and bag gloves. The rest might turn out to be an overinvestment if they don't want to go any further.
