2008's Canceled Prime-Time TV Shows

Did Your Show Make the Cut?

For dedicated TV fans, it is always hard to say goodbye to a show you enjoyed. Granted, the complicated ratings, advertising and demographic scales make it difficult for us average people to understand why a decent show we know other people watch gets the
ax. Perhaps each network desires to have that wildly popular break out hit, such as ABC has had with Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. Maybe these shows have made relative success seem like failure.

However it is justified, here are the shows that are gone for good.

Fox has eliminated The Return of Jezebel, Anchorwoman, Canterbury's Law and Back to You. It is difficult to understand how Canterbury's Law, starring Julianne Margulies and Aidan Quinn, wasn't a hit. Ditto for Back to You, with Kelsey Grammar and Patricia Heaton, who are both big names in the sitcom world (though perhaps the constant advertising for the show grew to be an annoyance, who knows?).

Fox also removed K-ville, Unhitched, Nashville, The Next Great American Band and New Amsterdam.

CBS appeared to be pretty generous, or at least satisfied with the great programs they do have. Viva Laughlin ended nearly before it began. Kid Nation had buzz, but fizzled out. Moonlight, Shark, Cane and Welcome to the Captain will not be returning. Cane seemed to have a good chance, and Welcome to the Captain seemed quirky enough to be possible.

Let us not forget Jericho. Even after a fan campaign that resulted in massive amounts of peanuts being delivered to CBS, they merely humored fans with a handful of episodes to provide somewhat adequate closure. Apparently millions of fans can be wrong.

NBC gave up on Bionic Woman, as well as a handful of some shows you may never have heard of! Clash of the Choirs, My Dad is Better Than Your Dad, Phenomenon, Las Vegas, 1 vs 100, The Singing Bee and Amne$ia. Apparently not all reality shows, or game shows, are hits. Networks would do well to remember this.

If a new show succeeds in a time slot, the network quickly moves it to a tougher time slot. Example: Shark following CSI Vegas, quickly moved to tv oblivion at 10pm Sunday evening. The there are interesting new shows like Moonlight, a promising package yanked because it couldn't beat out a couple of multi-year, established shows, even though it had promise and ratings continued to improve, right up till the axe hit it's mark. Of course nobody wants to mention that the network budget was all tied up in 3 aging CSI show effects, so that the effect budget for Moonlight was eliminated 1/2 way through the season, prompting half of the production staff to quit. What amuses me most about the strike year, is that the CABLE alternatives jumped all over the loss of "network" programming, moving up their best shows to fill the void. Now, a year later, cable is killing the Network advertising dollars, because clients get more coverage and better bang for their buck sponsering something like

I really enjoyed Moonlight, it was different, but had feeling and compassion. That's more than I can say for some of your stupid sitcoms, that are so stupid they are not even funny. Yet they stay on the aire. Granted a vampire is different as a passionate person, but Mick really brings it across the screen very well to Beth. I loved the guess work of just how far things would go. Please bring it back.

I would like to be added to the list of the upset group about Moonlight being cancelled. I really enjoyed this show and like the direction the show was going but it is ending and they are not trying to save this one. The ones i like to watch do always get cancelled and i don't watch alot of television now. i just want to keep a good schedule of shows that i can watch each week.

Moonlight was a great show. Cancelling it was a big mistake. Better to get rid of some more stupid shows and let this one survive.

Moonlight was one of the best shows on television. We looked forward to watching it every week. It would be a better idea to cut the morons who cut these shows
