Visit the River Narmada's Origin at Amarkantak in the State of Madhya Pradesh, India

There are many scenic places situated on the bank of River Narmada in India. The River Narmada flows through Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and finally meets the Arabian Sea near Surat. Extremely beautiful and scenic spots are found all along the coast of River Narmada. One such outstanding
 spot is Amarkantak near the city of Jabalpur in the State of Madhya Pradesh. Amarkantak is the best scenic spot on the bank of River Narmada and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

You can reach Amarkantak by air, rail and road. The nearest airport is Indore. The further drive of around 70 miles from Indore can be covered in a bus or hired car. You have to get down at Jabalpur station on Mumbai-Bhopal railway line. Amarkantak is only around 45 miles away from Jabalpur. River Narmada and the River Shon are originated from Amarkantak, which is situated on the Mountain of Maichal in the Mountain range of Vindhyachal. It is located at the height of 4000 feet from the mean sea level. It is a very holy place of pilgrimage for all the Hindus, being the origin of holy River Narmada. There is a very ancient temple of Narmada Ma here at Amarkantak. The River Narmada has a width of only around 10 feet here, which increases to around 1500 feet later during its path over Gujarat State. There is a small water fall, which is called Markandey Falls. Taking a bath here at this fall is considered very holy as per the Hindu Vedas. There is also an ashram of Kapil Muni here. This ashram is also built before around 3500 years and is situated just at the shore of the River Narmada. The atmosphere of this ashram is so peaceful and silent that you feel as if you have reached out of this world. The Duthdhara water fall is also worth visiting here. The water as white as milk falls here from the height of around 65 feet on the rocks, creating a very beautiful sight. The temple of Lord Shiva, known as Panchmukhi Mahadev is also near the main temple of Narmada Ma. The Shiva Lingam here has five sides and not in an elliptical shape. The other places like Kailash Ashram, Bhrugu Kamandal, and the Sonmuda must also be visited while at Amarkantak.
