Traveling as a large family can be expensive and complicated. Some parents with several children give up the idea all together. There are many approaches to making this a doable activity for any family. For the cost conscience person the idea of just spending money on several hotel rooms is beyond them. Day trips become the means of fun and activity, skipping the week away trips altogether. However, there is an alternative that can make memories that will last a lifetime.

Camping is a great way to travel with little cost and lots of adventure. Vacationing in the great outdoors can be a wonderful experience for families that have children of all ages. Most campgrounds have tons of activities right on the grounds to keep the family busy without ever having to leave the property. For those who want to venture off the grounds, there are many facilities that are located in tourist-ridden areas with the lodging at one-third the cost. The state parks have flavor of their own, but many privately owned campgrounds provide all the comforts of home. Most families who set out camping when their children are young will remain campers for decades.

For the first time camper it is always best to keep the away time short. A simple weekend away near home is a great beginner's vacation. Look for someone you know that camp and borrow their tent and some necessary equipment. Check to see if the campground has a dining area on site and decide how you might break up the meals, preparing some and buying the others. This will keep mom happy and still remain a low budget adventure. Plan time away when the weather is good and be flexible enough to cancel if stormy times are in the forecast. Soggy tent camping is not good for the novice camper.
