There was a time when I thought that a frozen pizza was a great solution to a quick dinner after a long day of working. At one point about the only cheese frozen pizza that I cared for was made by California Pizza Kitchen. Now a days I work at home and am able to find time to make home made pizzas instead. However a friend of mine recently tried out a couple single serving size pizzas from this company and invited me over to taste them. The one that I liked the best was the California Pizza Kitchen For One Crispy Thin Crust Margherita Frozen Pizza, although it was the one I preferred I didn't think in general that it was a very good product.

I wasn't familiar with what margherita pizza meant and so I looked it up. Interestingly enough Margherita refers to Queen Margherita of Savoy who favored a pizza prepared by baker Raffaele Esposito in the late eighteen hundreds. The pizza is said to have evoked the colors of the Italian flag, green, white and red with the use of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil leaves. Esposito named the pizza in the queen's honor. A second glance at the California Pizza Kitchen For One Crispy Thin Crust Margherita Frozen Pizza box revealed that the green representation was very, very subtle and almost none existent. I wondered how much basil was used and where it fell in the list of ingredients in this frozen pizza.
