The Best Foreign Films that Exist!
My Three Favorite Foreign Films
1) Tin Drum
Tin Drum, directed by Volker Schilondorff, is a German film about a three years old Oskar Matzerath who witnesses the world around him becoming something that he dislikes. To revolt, on his third birthday, Oskar promises himself to never grow another inch for the rest of his life! For many years to come, Oskar beats his tin drum in protest and if one tries to take the drum away, he screams a piercing scream that is capable of breaking glass within seconds.
We get to watch Oskar as he explores sexuality, war, and freedom. The very interesting thing about this film is the actor who played Oskar, David Bennent, actually stopped growing as well! Yet once he finished his teenage years, he started to grow again! Very fascinating film, a must see!
2) Brother of Sleep
Brother of Sleep, directed by Joseph Vilsmaierm, is a German film about a man, Elias Alder, who lives during the turn of the 19th Century. Elias is born with a gift for music which frightens and amazes the villagers. Peter, his only friend spends nights with Elias at the church where Elias produces mind-blowing pieces on the church organ.
Once Peter's sister, Elsbeth, is born, Elias is drawn to this lake where he experiences the sounds of the universe and comes out feeling spiritually bonded to Elsbeth and the sounds of the world around him. We get to watch the three grow up, passionately dedicated to each other and filled with jealousy in one way or another. This tale is unforgettable!
