Todd Bentley and the Florida Outpouring: Recent Christian Revival in Lakeland Attracts International Ministers and Church Leaders

They came from all over the world to meet with other Christ followers to worship, praise and receive a blessing before returning to their own countries. I was there on May 20, 2008 to hear and see the spiritual outpouring headed by Pastor Todd Bentley of Fresh Fire Ministries based in
 Toronto, Canada.

As I did research before my trip from different web sites, I learned that Todd is not your "typical" pastor. He is not the stereotype that so many people think of when they think of a preacher. He gives an exhilarating testimony of the saving grace of Jesus Christ while trapped in a lifestyle of drugs, even while in his drug dealer's trailer. He doesn't "look the part" of a man of God on the outside. His attire is casual most of the time-tee shirts and jeans-and he is covered with tattoos, but on the inside he has been forgiven and healed. In the 1990s revival outpourings similar to the Lakeland Revival took place in Toronto Canada and in Brownsville, Florida, near Pensacola. The Brownsville, Florida revival went on for months and a relative of mine who was there at the time says when she visited year later people were still talking excitedly about the outcome. He makes no claims to have caused anyone to be healed. He just obeys what God tells him to do. He humbly and readily gives God the glory and praise for all that happens. He did not just one day discover that people he prayed for were healed. He sought the Lord and desired to be a part of a healing ministry to so many hurting people and as he stepped out in faith, God imparted to him the ability to help others.

There are many "facts" that have been told about Todd and his actions in connection with the Lakeland Revival. Some of them may be true and a good many may not, however, Lakeland--at least for me was not about the man, Todd Bentley. It was about the God-man, Jesus Christ. Men will always live to cause sin to happen and Christ to be denied. The end of the Book says God will win. The victory has been won and sin has been defeated. No man can bring God down. He does still let us participate in His world and even in winning that World to Him, despite ourselves.

here's some truth from behind the scenes in Abbotsford. Jessa first of all was an intern in the fall 08 cycle. She never applied for it Todd invited her into the internship. Even after a board member severly opposed it. Later Todd invited her and another intern to live in his house during the internship, and after the internship as a live in nanny. At the same time the Bellingham, Washington church was being established so fresh fire could get a legal foot hold in America. This is evident by the lack and the sheer refusal to work with the local churches. It was just for the papers not the church. In January 2009 2 members of the board confronted Todd about Jessa, and that it was wrong and they couldn't stand by him about it. They where "relieved" of their position for doing so. This shouldn't be surprising as another member of FFM was faceed with the same threat, after he caught Todd with another woman in England (this is what the dark night of the soul was actually about), the F

Unfortunately no one can "stop missing the mark." The first sin we committed started us toward a place of separation from God. The only way of escape is to accept what Jesus did for us when he took our punishment on the cross and died for our "missing the mark." There is no "religion" that can help us with that. The only help is in a reltionship with Jesus. Healings occur when God choses.

I first encountered this kind of evangelism from Aimee Semple McPherson over the radio during the 1940s... later I encountered in again via TV and Oral Roberts, even had some experiential religion myself in the privacy of my own home. About 1990 Rodney Howard Browne was working a Revival in Lakeland Florida that I got to watch on TBN.. Hrowne's revival reminded me of many pot smoking sessions I had witnessed, the very same kind of phenomena.. I have seen healings in many different religious settings with claims from many different sources... I think there is an enormous amount of semantic confusion in the God Business.. Once you get your primary concepts in harmony with reality healings occur.... you stop missing the mark (sinning) and you begin to live a harmonious life..

I believe if we would get our eyes off of Bentley (the outward appearance) and focus on the move of God, we will judge it as a genuine move of God. I think it is merely a tip of the iceburg as does a sweeping demonstration of His love for the people on planet Earth by healing all their diseases. The great thing about God, He never asks permission on how He moves, where He moves or upon whom He uses. He's sovereign. For a great read check out "A Step Into Deliverance" by T. Pugh. It's a riveting autobiography about one pastor's battle with the spirit of Jezebel.
