My father is buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. My daughter placed flowers on his and Mama's grave site next to their tombstone. He died in 1968 and when my mother died in 1995, she was buried on top of my father.

As my daughter placed flowers on their grave site, she cried. Why? Because she grew up with a mother who understood the sacrifice her grandfather made in World War II where he served as a medic - a nurturer of his fellow fallen soldiers. She understood he had placed himself in harm's way to protect the country he loved - The United States of America.

In 1968 when Daddy died, there was dissent in our country, but nothing like I see today. There was differences in opinion, but not the vitriolic hatred I see and hear every time I turn on the television. People honored the position of the President, even if they disagreed with his decisions. And yes, there was racial tension, but I was proud to peacefully march with Martin Luther King, children in tow, for equal rights.

Today I hear little about the meaning of Memorial Day that squares with my knowledge of it. It appears to me that it is little more than a drinking holiday, a legal "day off" from work, or a day to become a couch potato watching television. And what do many see? Hatred!

I compare our country (where we still have far more freedoms than any other country) to North Korea where absolutely everybody loves their "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il (son of demigod Kim Il-sung). He is adored and worshiped and is seen as the source of everything good. Little children, dressed in uniforms, sing songs of praise to him. Adults gush about him like he was an adoring father. He tells them what they can watch on television. He says "no internet" because he does not want them to know what's going on in the world outside. And do they mind? No! They have implicit trust for their "dear leader" and do not mind they have no personal freedoms at all. After all, their "dear leader" knows what's best for them, even what clothes to wear, books to read, and music to listen to!

Beautifully written tribute. I appreciate your point about the negativity heaped on our leaders, and implicit criticism of our troops and their mission, all for political gain. The recent returnees with whom I've spoken, Marines, Navy, AF, and Army, are all proud to serve in the Middle East. Their concerns are focused around the resolve of the American public and the media criticism of the war effort. Once again, really fantastic article & I love that video! Kim

Thank you, Katlyn. I'm glad you enjoyed the article and the photo. I always thought Daddy looked like a combo between Clark Gable and Tennessee-Ernie-Ford! ha!

Thank you, Sussy, Linda and Joshua for your comments. I do hope all 3 of you are having a memorable Memorial Day! I'm thinking about my Dad today.

Great post! I agree - it is so important for us to remember the reason for the occasion . . . and the cost of our freedoms! (By the way, I never knew you could embed videos into a post!)

"making news" vs "reporting it" as you said in your own comment I just read...excellent. And excellent article too!

Thanks Michelle, Kim and Phyllis. I want to address what you said, SMORG (Michell): I think the BIG difference today is that on all the tv stations we hear "commentators" MAKING the news, not REPORTING it. The station where I see it the most is CNBC (the stock/business channel) where one word of negative assumption can send a stock plummeting! (It ain't just in Hollywood where gossip is deadly!) Even "celebrities" are pontificating about all things political, like we give a twit what they "think"! If everyone would just shut up and let the newscasters REPORT the news, it would be better, but still not perfect. --- My son was a reporter for NBC in Louisiana and he was told (regularly) what he could NOT report on! Now that is highly prejudicial, don't you think? Anytime a prolifer did something good, it wasn't allowed to be reported. Or anytime a Christian did something admirable, it wasn't allowed to be reported. --- Of course it was a different story if something would scare the heck

A great tribute, April. I don't really know but I suspect that a lot of the difference in our attitude toward the military today and in the mid 20th Century has a lot to do with the information we have access to now. Back then we just had to rely on a few news outlets (and much of them weren't exactly unbiased by patriotism.. or nationalism... or sometimes a blend of both). It was easier to sell a 'for a great cause' cause back then. Now we are actually shown what happens on the ground in the war zone, if not on official news, then by independent amateur reporters who post them on the net.... and it isn't so easy to hide what misjudgment or mistake or agenda of the president who sends our military to war anymore (I think that's why the office of presidency doesn't command as much 'respect' now). At any rate, I wish Memorial Day'd mean more to more people than just a 'day-off' indeed. Thanks for another good read! :o)

Well, Charlene, I guess you'd better keep some tissues by your computer if my articles affect you like that! ha! I just think it's very important to speak out about our country. For about 2 weeks after 9/11 it seemed like we were coming together like one people and seeking God's face. But then... well, you know, peoples' memories are short after a crisis. Thanks for the tearful comment, Charlene!

My dad also was a WW2 vet. This is awesome April! **crying as always!** I can't help it, your articles always touch me in a profound way.

Tony, sounds like you had a great day! And as for the html format displaying video, are you speaking of blogger? If so, the answer is yes.
