Glucophage Side Effects: Why I Quit Taking Glucophage to Treat Insulin Resistance

This is about Glucophage and its side effects, in response to Heather Michelle’s article Glucophage: Treatment for Insulin Resistance. This is my first hand experience taking Glucophage, the side effects I experienced and how it made me
feel. I have insulin resistance; it goes along with my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). I had done all the research that I could on treatments for PCOS and the insulin resistance so I wasn’t surprised when my doctor suggested I try Glucophage. I had read all about the side effects that I could have from taking the Glucophage. I knew all about how some people have an upset stomach for a few weeks after they start the Glucophage. I also understood there could be a severe side effect known as lactic acidosis, although this was rare.

I just wanted something that was finally going to help my body act like it was suppose to. As Heather Michelle stated in her articleGlucophage: Treatment for Insulin Resistancepeople dealing with insulin resistance can also throw off the other hormones in the body causing other problems. This is the case with me. The doctor said if I went on the Glucophage it should help my body use the insulin it produced better and that will make my other hormones get stabilized. So I was all for this since we were trying to conceive I needed my body to work right.

For those who Metformin/Glucophage has helped to conceive a son or daughter, congratulations! However, be mindful of the fact that if YOU have PCOS, your daughter may also, and even if you have a son, he may be more susceptible to insulin resistance, so avoid letting them eat typical childhood snacks and perhaps they will need to go on Glucophage if they start gaining weight --get their blood sugars checked.

I tried Metformin regular (a few side effects) so I tried Metformin ER (ineffective), so I went back to regular Metformin. Then I heard Glucophage is better than Metformin (which is the generic), so I switched to Glucophage (NOT THE EXTENDED RELEASE). I am doing better on the Glucophage versus the Metformin -- I don't care if it's more expensive, it works. Also, I find that Relora (Relacore, Cortislim) really helps everything along. Also, if I even have 2 tablespoons of lite beer, I get side effects, so it seems maybe some people have side effects perhaps because they are continuing to ingest ANY AMOUNT of alcohol. I have found that eating Lundberg's organic short grain brown rice for breakfast and dinner helps A LOT. I have to exercise as well for Gluophage to do its thing, every day, even if it's just a little exercise. I also use Natural Woman progesterone cream and I think some sufferers have other hormonal imbalances that maybe make them react to Met/Glucophage, so perhaps t

After reading some of the other comments, I am considering taking myself off glucophage. The side effects to me are far worse than the benefits. So far the only benefit is pregnacy and at 45, I do NOt want that. I am not diabetic, I do have a few extra pounds around the middle, but I feel exercise and diet outway the side effects.

I just recently was placed on Glucophage. Starting out @ 500mg twice a day to work up to 1000mg twice a day, I can't get past 500mg. I am so tired, sleepy and feel as if I am coming down with the flu. I am NOT trying to get pregnant. I do have PCOS. What other treatments are out there?

I was so relieved to read that I'm not the only one having trouble with this drug. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006. I was started immediately on Metformin but after only a few days the nausea was unbearable. I stopped the meds temporarily and resumed a few months later. Again, after several of unbearable, trash can hugging mornings at work I called my OB office and reported the symptoms. I took nothing over the next year and decided to give it one more go about 3 months ago. Again, the nausea was horrible. I'm a nurse and it doesn't look very well when I'm trying not to vomit alongside my own patients. I'm asking for anti-emetics at my next appointment and will give Metformin one more chance.

I'm now all about being my own Advocate, researching all of my Meds. & symptoms and not just mindlessly taking any and all drugs that a Doctor suggests without getting the side effects and reasons why I should take them. I'm also going to eat healthier, continue exercising, sleep more & decrease my stress level. I just hope that this Nueropathy is not permanent. My advice to anyone not getting a straight answer from his or her Doctor regarding Metformin or any other Drug is to follow you own "gut" instincts and get a 2nd opinion or better yet a new Doctor who you've researched.

I was diagnosed with PCOS last year. I wasn't allowed to try getting pregnant because I also have moderate-severe crohns disease. In Jan I was told I could try. I had a sugar level of 9. They recently came out and said that if you have PCOS then your level should be 5. I don't have the bathroom problem (although I go more normally from the crohns), but I have been having the bloating bad, gaining weight, and the one the hurts the most joint pain. I am a teacher and if I keep moving I am fine but if I sit too long it is painful. Mornings and nights hurt the most. It hurts to walk, do anything with my hands, my shoulders...any joint. Anyone else have this? I talked to the nurse about it and she thinks I am lying and blowing it out of proportion. Not being able to walk...not exactly a little pain. I have delt with my crohns...which is major pain...for 11 years. I know the difference between a little pain and great amounts of pain. Someone please tell me they have had this, a
