Network Marketing Business Opportunity: Does it Only Work in Theory?

I know that I'll probably get slammed with negative comments from die-hard network marketers, but some things just have to be said. I was just recently approached by a network marketing company for a chance to be involved with a "great business opportunity". I've been approached many
times before, and over the years, my husband and I have been involved with at least five different network marketing companies. All produced the same result....money going out...little or no money coming in.

I can hear the criticism loud and clear....you must treat your network marketing business like a business... you have to talk to at least ten people a day...you must attend all weekly meetings...sit in on the phone conferences...go to all conventions...and the list goes on. Been there and done all that. It still amounted to more money going out, than money coming in.

Just for the record, I have owned a successful high-end candle and accessories gift store in a local mall for five years. I recently closed it after economic conditions in the area, sent more people to discount stores for gift buying. So, I do know how to run a business.

Also, I am not against network marketing. In theory network marketing it is a great concept. Everyone helps to facilitate the success of each other. Only I never really experienced that happening. What I've experienced was an excited close friend or business associate introducing me to a promising business opportunity. I, in turn, got all excited about the network marketing company and its business opportunity and approached people I knew. Some got excited, some told me to take a hike. The ones that got involved were never as involved as I was and eventually stopped participating.

Seems to me, the only people getting rich are the people who started the company and their cronies. And the worker bees are out there trying to recruit people to do the same and selling products and or services that people don't really want or need.

I partnered with a network marketing company that paid you to go on the vacations you were already going to take. Long story short, I used the products to validate they worked, went on a 4d 3n RCCL cruise with the family for $79 pp, got 2 oceanview cabins. Absolutely phenominal. Once I saw it worked I showed it to some friends over a BBQ at my house. We did some LIVE searches, they saw the checks I've received and said it was a no-brainer. My team (most of them I don't know) has grown to 40 of the 50 states now. I walked away from my Director position in 11/08 in the worst economic time in our lives. Jaws dropped. I now have a business with ZERO monthly overhead, no products to stock in the garage (100% internet) and my family vacations twice a month. It has drastically changed our life. Cheryl, I just came across your article and felt compelled to reply so I could share my experiences. I will try to keep it short because I could go on for a while with all of the drastic life changes I've experienced the last 21 months. I was always of the same mindset that most people have about the network marketing industry, where you gotta pitch & try to sell something to all of your friends & family, stock up on a garage full of products, pay big monthly fees to stay active, and then buy tons of books, tapes, etc. to push out to your team. Everyone seemed to be with a company that claimed to have a better pill, juice, vitamin, skin cream, etc. and they want you to switch what you've been using happily for the last 20 years to try theirs. That doesn't sound exciting at all to me or most people. Then in July of 2007 I was introduced to a company and concept that blew me away. I partnered with a network marketing company that paid you to go on the vacations you were already goi

Network marketing sounds a lot like Amway, and I just can't stomach trying to sell things to friends and family (which is who marketers hit up first, of course). And I get teed off when friends and family try to sell me stuff. Sounds like this was a good learning experience, though. We're all trying to find ways to make a living, aren't we?

It's good to be a little bit cynical. Ten people a day seems like so little to do. Great article :) Sheri
