When I first thought about entering into Law Enforcement, I knew that it was the most interesting and possibly the most the dangerous job on the planet. What I didn’t know was that it was also the most stressful job in the world. From my experiences with law enforcement agents, I was always under the impression that they were laid back for the most part, all that weren’t complete assholes. Then I was introduced to the book Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement and my eyes were open to a side of law enforcement agents that I had never been exposed to before. The book took me on an in-depth look at a law enforcement agent’s life both professional and personal. For the most part I had a clear understanding of what an on duty officer does, simple, protect and serve. Boy was I erroneous about what the run of the mill everyday law enforcement agent goes through. It’s a lot more then just apprehending the bad guys. All cops start out on the same journey when it comes to becoming an officer, they go through changes; however, they must learn self survival because most of the changes they go through are inevitable. Cops never really have a clear vision of what’s actually taking place and some develop the biological rollercoaster called hypervigilance, which does have some long term effects that some cops just simply can not deal with. On the other hand, other law enforcement agents become emotional survivors and lead a perfectly normal life.

Takeaways
  • There is always help.
  • You are not alone.
Did You Know?
