Dogs are not only man's best friends they can also help your kids to grow into responsible, empathetic and well adjusted adults. Kids simply like to have dogs as pets and you can take advantage of this and involve your children in taking care of your dog. Also if you are planning to bring home a new dog it is the children who will spend the most time with it and that is why they should be taught how to take care of the dog. It is a great opportunity as children will learn to be aware of things other than themselves and how to adjust their behavior to suit others and different ways of communication. Although children will take to dogs easily they must be taught how to take care of the dog with responsibility.

Kids should be told that a dog is a living creature and it needs food, water and shelter like others. Dogs need fresh food and fresh water every day. Tell your kids that like humans dogs, especially puppies, need nutrition to grow and stay healthy. As the dog cannot find food for itself you are responsible for feeding it. The nutritional requirements of dogs are different from human beings and hence dogs cannot be given everything we eat. Some foods that are suitable for humans may actually harm a dog. Explain that it is not wise to feed the tidbits of food or leftovers all the time to your dog. Sweets can also harm them. If the dog lives outside the home then their water needs to be changed regularly as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Small children cannot be given the entire responsibility of providing food and water to the dog. They should do it under adult supervision.
