Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: A Cynical Fairytale

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: A Cynical Fairytale

My interest in the lives of celebrities is what I would call average. I don’t actively look for information about a particular celebrity, but I don’t turn away either when information is presented to me. So when the news of
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wedding preparations are talked about on television, I pay attention. But before I continue I have to say this: I don’t have anything against Tom Cruise, in fact, I am rather indifferent toward him. I don’t pay to go see his movies and when I have seen him interviewed, I always think one of two things: the interviewer is kissing his butt and is he ever off? Does anyone ever really get to see behind his actor persona?

But since his meeting, falling in love, and public fawning over Katie Homes, I have been puzzled. Why? His PDA’s, public displays of affection, toward Katie Holmes does not seem romantic to me, in fact it is the complete opposite. I wondered, does Ms. Holmes ever say to Mr. Cruise, “Could you stop parading me around in public?” Really, does anyone every think she ever says, ‘No’ to him, at all? Remember, Tom Cruise famous interview with Matt Lauer on the “Today Show.” What bothered me about that interview was not so much his views-to each his own-but that he had Ms. Holmes sit across directly from him on the Today Show’s couch, so that he could look at her during the interview. Or she could look at him?
