The Cleveland Botanical Garden is sometimes overlooked in favor of flashier museums and attractions in the Cleveland area (think Rock Hall and Science Center), but at a reasonable price, one can have a beautiful, not to mention fun-filled afternoon. The admission prices are very reasonable (see website for details), and include full day admission to the entire institution.
There are a few different attractions within the garden. Outside, there are expansive plots of different types of flowers. The Botanical Garden boasts theme gardens, herb gardens, a beautiful rose garden, and even a children's garden, complete with play places, fun facts, and hands on activities.
Inside, there are massive green-house type rooms. The first is the spiny desert room, which has desert flowers, vegetation, and even animals! The second room is even more incredible. It is the butterfly room, and true to its name, is teeming with scores of brightly colored butterflies! By the thousand, these winged beauties float around the enormous enclosure. Some are shy, but others will land right on your shoulder! There is also a viewing area where one can witness new butterflies breaking out of their cocoons. It is a wonderful example of the growth cycle of the butterfly, and a great learning environment.
The inside areas are particularly interesting for children, and the butterfly room will provide tons of entertainment for those of any age.
The Garden also has a café, in case lunch becomes necessary, although like most restaurants contained in a museum-type building, prices there are a little steep. This is easily avoided by venturing outdoors for lunch. The University Circle area has many dining opportunities that might be a little softer on the wallet.
The gift shop is a delight, and sells things from beautiful garden benches to toys for the kids. Of course, the prices here leave a bit to be desired as well, but the quality of the items and the overall experience at the Garden make the price seem well worth it.
