A Brief Awareness

A brief awareness of dead dreaming me
then into the scene, into the cockpit
with the determined pilot: "We'll hit
there, drop our load and split," over the sea,
veering inland. I shook him. He shook free
and bombed Passau; I couldn't prevent it
but fell from the sky in pursuit -- alit
with a crack of bone, chuteless, in a tree,
the fire and poison washing over me.
A brief awareness of dead dreaming me,
then the discovery that I'm all bone,
all mended but fleshless, pits for eyes,
invisible, inaudible, alone
a warning that descended from the skies
for nothing
