How a Christian Can Support Gay Marriage

My faith is a huge part of my life. It wasn’t always such an integral part of me, but after dealing with the unexpected death of a very close family member; struggling to help a friend who was abused by her father; and then dealing with a severe bout of depression during my freshman year of college, I have come to realize how much I need Christ in my life. I firmly believe that as a Christian, I am called to share my Savior’s love and to follow the principles He laid out in the Bible. Because of this, and because my faith is not supportive of the homosexual cause, many people would probably be surprised to hear that I am a proponent of gay marriage; I also find no conflict between my faith and the issue of gay marriage. If you find this to be an interesting (or maddening) contradiction, keep reading.

Firstly, there is an undeniable separation between church and state. Regardless of a person’s person beliefs regarding a particular issue, separation has to be maintained. If there is a law prohibiting gay marriage, why not a law prohibiting spouses from having affairs with other people? Why not a law prohibiting sex before marriage? These are all moral issues, but laws are not made to enforce morality; they are created for the protection of citizens. They are not created to enforce a particular church’s beliefs; they are created on behalf of the state to both defend rights and guard the population. Therefore, even if someone was convinced that homosexuality was wrong, they would have no right to impose that belief on the entire nation.

one thing to say: Do the parts fit? Do the puzzle peaces go together? no. So it wasn't meant to be. God made man and woman peaces to fit only :)

there is no law against adultery, or premarital sex. but maybe if there was america wouldnt have the highest divorce rate in the world. how benificial is it for the child to have only one parent because she conceived when she was fifteen? and you could argue that murder is a moral value. all laws are based on some sort of moral values. if someone was convinced rape wasnt wrong, you could say that we have no right to impose our belief that rape is immoral on him.

I have got to say, I was reading the comments, and I say, why are so many paople against gays? Come on, gay men are much more nicer to be with than normal men. They get their heads out of the clouds and are not so macho. I personally prefer to be with a gay guy than with a hetero man who will rape anything in a skirt. And while we're talking religion, if Christianity thinks that gays are such a crime, why don't we take the Muslims into account and take all of the women's rights away and throw acid in their faces? (Not that all Muslims believe that, and not to offend anyone, but all Christians don't hate gays either). Don't bother answering this comment, because I won't be visiting this site again.

There was a time, not too long ago, in America when it was illegal to have sex outside of marriage and for unmarried couples to live together. There was also a time when abortion was illegal and recognized as the murder of an innocent human being. Just because our society has chosen to repeal these laws, doesn't make it right. What was wrong from the beginning, in most cases, is still wrong.

A most excellent and reasonable view. Thank you for expressing it.

Comment continued: God is not pleased and is righteous in His anger toward those who disregard His commands that were given to protect us from our own ignorance. Consider the results of homosexual marriage, abortion and evolution from an objective standpoint. They are the unholy trinity that will turn this nation on its head.

Homosexuality is an abomination in the sight of God, and anything God disapproves of is what Christians should disapprove of. Gay is wrong in single people, so what makes you think it is okay to permit gay marriage? Do a search on countries where Gay marriage has been approved and see the degradation and moral landslide that came after it. The Bible is clear on nations that forget God and His commandments. Do you think God will bless this nation when this nation puts its seal of approval on something God specifically calls an abomination? The government had better abide by the law of God concerning not only this issue, but the murder of innocent babies in their Mother's womb as well their sanction of the false teaching of evolution in the public schools to the exclusion of any other possibilities including creation by an intelligent being. God is not pleased and is righteous in His anger toward those who disregard His commands that were given to protect us from our own ignora

You can oppose gay marriage from a secular perspective.. Please, google and read "The Secular Case Against Gay Marriage" by Adam Kolasinski to learn why the gov't should not grant marriage to homosexuals. Btw, no matter what kind of views you have - whether pro or con - you will still be imposing your view. In your case, you are imposing the view that gay marriage is okay.

I am a Christian and like you I do not believe in imposing beliefs on others (although at times competing beliefs cannot help but come into conflict). My reasons against gay marriage are more secular in nature. I think preventing the government from getting into the marriage game altogether is a stronger position. Those who would support gay marriage would probably not support incestuous marriages, marriages to animals, polygamy, etc. But why not? Most just dismiss those "marriages" as absurd but let it be known that gay marriage would have been equally absurd 200 years ago. Perhaps you do not see the "slippery slope" because you are standing on it.

your first point is good! i never thought of that...however your second seems lacking. exactly how much power should we give the government? and who's to specify what the government should and shouldnt do? the power to limit how we should marry seems not as great as the power to start wars. should we take this power away as well because the government is made up of humans and all humans make mistakes? should we give humans ANY power since we are all mistake-prone? but again, i dig the first argument.

have to remember its not what I think as a Christians is what God say, As a Chirstians we have to stand for the word of God God sayed if you love me you will obey my law and commmands. Psalm 1 1Jn 2;5 Obeys his word. 1 Jn 2;15 Do not love the world anything in the world the love of the Father is not in him Christians born agains have to live recording to the word of God not the world It not my word its God word. We all sinness but God but we have to comme before God in the name of JesusChrist ask for forgiveness. Holy Spirit bring conviction / devil bring condemnation Fee from bandage/ Generation sexual cult

People specialy Christians need the conviction of the Holly Spirit 1 corint 2;13,16 We have the mind of Christ. John 8;32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. We have to be the light in darkennes. 1 Corint 6; 18 flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexully sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spririt, who is in you, whom you have recieved from God ?You are not your own, you were bought at a price. There honor God with your body. 1 Corint 7;1,9 sinful nature are; sexual, impurity& debauchery. We have to bear fruits the fruits of the Spirit is, love self- control.. Ephesians 6;12 For our struggle is not agaist fresh & blood but agaist the rulers, agaist authorities, agaist the powers of this dark world and agaist the spirtual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Although I do not share your views, I will not impose mine on you. Thanks for the thoughts. Disagreement is the start of a great discussion.
