Based in Chicago, Illinois, the Great Books Foundation strives to promote independent thinking and ideas. The website- http://www.greatbooks.org- is a strong rescource for teachers, for book clubs, libraries, and others interested in literature. Several of the features to be found there include free teaching materials, anthologies that foster discussion, information to help parents in developing love for reading in their children, and even helpful information for college professors. There are instructions on how to begin your own book discussion group. There is a magazine sponsored by the foundation titled The Common Review. It boasts the Academy of American Poets as among its friends along with other prestigious organizations.
This website is worth visiting and poking around. There is a bookstore which might yield the curious mind some interesting reading material, particularly from American classics. Also included is a "reading series" which seems to be books that the foundation itself has supervised into print specifically for the programs it fosters.
Maybe you will find something you like, something you didn't realize was out there, or something to broaden your thinking and perspective. Who knows?
