Rachel Ray's Scarf on Dunkin' Donuts Commercial Raises Ire
Rachel Ray, the TV cook, was supposed to appear in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial but the commercial was pulled after criticism was thrown at her by people saying that she was dressed like a Muslim terrorist.
Ray appeared in the Dunkin' Donuts commercial wearing a black-and-white scarf. Arab men often wear keffiyehs, a symbolic traditional headdress. There were also complaints saying that the headdress was a symbol of murderous Palestinian jihad. The ad was finally pulled after the complaints
kept pouring in, according to AHN.
The criticism of Dunkin' Donuts and Rachel Ray was entirely unfair to say the least. There is no doubt that this is not what they were going for when they made the commercial nor was it their intentions.
There are many who wear these headdresses just for the style and it has nothing to do with them being a terrorist. There are many who wear things and do not know that they are symbolic such as the one that Rachel Ray wore in the canceled Dunkin Donuts commercial.
The critics that put up a hassle with the company did not have a legitimate claim and if I were to see the commercial I would have probably been like most of America and not even realize that this headdress had a symbolic background. I would have probably even commented on how great it was for a TV cook to be doing a Dunkin Donuts ad.
There is too much put into what everyone wears and the critics don't even think half the time that this may have not been what the actors or companies were going for. It could have been a mere coincidence and one that they probably still do not see what all the fuss is about.
