The fourth of July is most definitely an American holiday if ever there were. The long held traditions of celebrating the national holiday goes hand and hand with festivities such as family gathering, barbecues, parties and the coveted weekend getaway. All are renowned as the makings of legendary story to pass down for generations to come. My top ten song list for the fourth of July comes from a place of being somewhat expatriated by way of living outside of the Americas for sixteen years in the United Kingdom before returning in 2005.
Annually, I would observe the American July 4th celebration and mentions on international television from across the pond all the while missing America even if for just on that particular day. Here are my top ten songs for the holiday that represents the Independence Day of America and so much more to each of us every year since.
1. Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen 1984
An all it time favorite like a glorious blast from the past from the man himself. This song is always a crowd pleaser. Definitely, a holiday play must.
2. Old Time Rock And Roll - Bob Seger 1978
This is a song made most popular in a little Tom Cruise 80's flick called Risky Business always gets them on their feet. It is just a great song even decades on.
3. Stranglehold - Ted Nugent 1976
Ok, so this song does not speak much about America itself. I just love this song as it has the power to make you move and can get you in the mood for just about anything. Great song everyday of the year!
4. Living in America - James Brown 1999
The late great James Brown performed this song and no matter where you are from suddenly you too can feel as if "yes I live in America" levels of patriotism. This song has high energy levels that just explode and take flight. It also holds a really strong feel good factor which is always fun for any party or gathering.
5. This is Not America - David Bowie
This song was my reminder annually when all around no Fourth of July fireworks sound off was ever heard that I was not in America, but instead the UK. It is classic Bowie whose voice just melts through the lyric. It is just gorgeous to listen to anytime of the year.
