What is the most important thing to look for in a daycare?
I think one of the most important attributes to look for while assessing the quality of a daycare is how "humane" their philosophy is. By "humane", I don't mean just the qualities of compassion, understanding, tolerance and consideration. I mean how well their environment and teaching principles are in harmony with the basic human tendencies that every human being is born with.
Let me explain. Human tendencies are universal and enduring. They have endured since the stone ages. Man has studied and documented some of the enduring qualities and ever since then these human tendencies have found a significant place in almost every field that adult psychology has touched - Workplace behavior, Relationship Counseling, Anthropology, Sociology etc. However, it has not found a meaningful and compelling place in the study of the child, much less in child pedagogy. Hence most of our pedagogical systems have not leveraged the power of this knowledge and have designed systems that are not in harmony with these universal human tendencies. Day care centers and schools included.
