DANGER: Starting a Rock Band Can Be HAZARDOUS to Your Health!

But If You Feel You MUST Rock, Here's How to Start a Band.

I feel it is my duty to warn you fledging musicians that starting a band can be hazardous to your health and welfare. If you play in a band, there are many venereal diseases waiting for you, you'll probably go deaf, there are many shady characters that will try to make you do all sorts of
drugs, and you'll probably die naked in a flop house...

If that doesn't stop you from wanting into the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of bandom, then here's my advice for starting a band...

To start off... it is actually easier to JOIN a band than it is to start one. If you are a drummer or a bass player you will be in high demand (especially if you are good). Starting a band from scratch is never easy - you've gotta find people that can play, have equipment, and most importantly - that SHARE YOUR VISION of what this new band will be all about. A band is like a 5-way marriage (or 4 or 3), and these days it's hard enough for a 2-way marriage to last, just imagine what it's like when you've got 4 or 5 egos/personalities involved... Anyways, the best way to find other musicians to play with (if you don't already know any) is...

Look in the local music rags - Most local music magazines have a classified ad section for musicians and bands. Sometimes, they even let you post an ad for FREE if you are a musician looking for a band. This is how I got my start in bands, I placed an ad in the local rag saying something like "Bass player looking for cool punk band into Motorhead, blah blah blah" or something like that. (I started out as a bass player just cause they are in high demand). I got plenty of calls from bands, and finally (after checking out 5-6 bands) I found one that I liked... and of course there are tons of internet classifieds like Craig's List where placing a musician ad is always free.

When placing an ad, be sure to include what kind of music you want to play, and some bands you like. Or you can see what bands are looking for new members. After I joined my first band, I met scores of fine musicians from playing shows - some of them I formed bands with years later. I never had to place an ad again!

These people who say don't waste your time, were into it for possibly all the WRONG reasons. Music IS ART! millions of people paint for the pure love of the art/or write poetry or act in their local theaters for the LOVE of the ART!! If money is your be all end all then go somewhere else to get rich. "Making" people wear dog collars is not gonna make u look cool. It's true MOST great bands never get anywhere in the business I've seen greater shows in front of 20 people than 20,000. So if u can only get personal satisfaction from being rich & famous than maybe it's time for some introspection. 'Making it" has NOTHING to do w/being a great band and if being a great band isn't enough, than take their advice and don't waste your and everybody elses time! How many terrible bands have "made it"? Just turn on your radio right now, you'll here plenty of them. If u r in a band and really want to make a go of it.... 1. DO NOT START A FAMILY 2. PRACTICE YOUR INSTRUMENT 3. PLAY FROM THE H

Don't bother wasting your time and ruining your life. Take it from me!! I tried starting a band from when I was 17 to 27. Yeah, we played a few shows, some parties, had the craziest time of our lives. NOW WHAT? I wasted 10 years of my life, dropped out of college and found out that a band gets you no where! There are 1000s of musicians out there that are completely washed up. I'm 34, I went back to school to get a 4 year degree which took 6 years because I was working now and I have a family too! Now I can't find a job because I'm competing for entry level jobs with 23 year olds (hi tech). They think I'm a loser because if I had gone to college when I was 18 like my dad said, I could have had 10 years of professional experience by now. I'm not blaming rock-n-roll.. but unless you want to completely sell out and form a band like Green Day or Nirvana or what ever is out there now! YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT! UNLESS YOU TREAT THE BAND LIKE A BUSINESS!! THAT IS .... YOU SELL OUT!

Man, I wish there was a freakin' edit button to fix stupid mistakes! Sorry, that should have been "your title..." :)

I'm a diehard rock fan (I'm also singer and musician), so you're title pulled me in! You kept my attention from the first word to the last. Great article and welcome to AC!

"No flakes - Well, this applies to everyone except drummers (who are all flakes)." This made me laugh out loud and choke on my soda! The drummer in my ex-husband's band reminded me of Animal. He was so crazy! Great article - you have a great writing style. Welcome to AC!

What an eye opening article. I just watched a movie on TV about Def Leppard. Everything you describe in your article happened to them. Thanks for the expert advice. Welcome to AC.

By the way, wish you'd write a whole separate article about WHY drummers are flakes. That part caught my attention.
