Chapter 27: The Murder of John Lennon - Movie Review

Film Review of JP Schaefer's Debut Starring Jared Leto

The film Chapter 27 is a vignette of how obsessions, psychosis and creativity crash into the world of celebrity; namely the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman. Starring as Chapman, Jared Leto devoured pints of microwaved ice cream, with soy sauce and olive oil to put the pounds
into his role. Fortunately the bloating didn't go to his head and he stepped lightly, but with heavy eyes, carrying JP Schaefer's directorial debut in a rather touchy subject. The film follows Chapman's descent into deranged obsession three days before he shot John Lennon outside his home at the Dakota building in New York City. December 8th, 1980 was a tragic day for millions of people as John Lennon's cult of personality, became Mark David Chapman's effigy of celebrity.

Chapter 27 is a darkly artistic rendering, forcing one to watch from a cerebral state in search of meaning within Chapman's motives to kill Lennon. Though much like his inspiration for derangement, JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, Chapman wandered New York City detaching himself from society and reality. His thought process, revealed through Jared Leto's voice-overs, are poetic ramblings that take shape in phonies, ducks, lions and tigers and bears (Wizard of OZ postcards). Mark David Chapman is a soul that took a wrong turn on the yellow brick road and started playing a fiddle way out of tune. Yet, here I am honoring his name with full pronouncement, as my Dad so rightfully pointed out; "why do we honor assassins and murderers into infamy with their full names?" With this we give murderers like Mark David Chapman more than just a supporting role in the story of their victims. There are elements of the film that show Chapman, like so many psychopaths, desiring infamy or in his mind, notoriety for slashing a mark in history.

Well Im a bit late in the topic though I got your email about it on myspace forever ago. In my opinion the film doesnt glamourize MDC but it sheds a light on the darkness of a mind that could comit such a trecherous act. MDC was a sick man and desperatly needed help froma society that choose to just look the other way because he was just a bit odd. I feel Leto showed this in the acting. He dared to do something that wasnt done before he not only got into the mind of a killer but also the physical atributes that went along with this particular killer. I feel he was amazing. MDC became "famous" the day he shot John Lennon having a movie about it (which this isnt the only movie about it) is not making him any more "famous". It sheds a sense of understanding that has been blocked away for years. We all grew up knowing who John Lennon was and that he was shot but we were brought up with the monster of MDC as well. I absolutly think the movie is a brilliant masterpiece and they couldnt ha

It was a very interesting articicle. It just makes you think that any person that you run into on the street can be obsessive and be capable of just taking someone's life just like that. It's a scary thought for anyone really, but especially celebrities who are so much in the public spotlight. I have yet to see the movie, although I am looking forward to seeing it.

I liked the review and the way it's written, you express your own impressions on it without judging and it's good. It also raised quite the same questionings about this special case (I am a fan of The Beatles and Lennon in special) and the reasons for his murdering and the society in general... I guess if Chapmans surroundings wouldn't be so allienating and oblivion of his person, maybe his crime could have been prevented... And we still keep oblivion of many persons who, like Chapman have more than a thing to say to express their discontent...

lol, yea I know technically 30 Secs to Mars are not EMo, and Jared is far from it, but it was the quickest cultural reference I could come up with at the time. I was waiting for someone to point that out. Glad you did.

Thanks, it was an interesting read. I've seen the movie a while ago and it was creepy. "Jared Leto's innocent-Emo eyes" haha JL is not "emo". I wish that Mr.Leto would stay away from this kind of project. Not only he's done damage to his health, but he also might attract some of the nutcases.

Good article, it's a good read and it's very true. John Lennon's assassin was, and is, a mentally disturbed individual, and this movie shows nothing else. I don't know if this movie shows MD Chapman as famous, or more that it shows how sick a human being's mind can be. Otherwise, good piece, I enjoy your writing style.

Good article But I think your right in the fact that people seem to give fame to people who are murders I think Jared does a great part, as he does come across very unstable as they do say there is a fine line between sanity and insanity xxxxxx
