Our ten-year-old Shih Tzu, Sidney, has been having a terrible problem with itchy, dry skin recently. Shih Tzu are prone to skin and allergy problems. We had fed him a lamb and rice dog food for several years, but when our supplier went out of business, we had to find another dog food that Sidney would eat, and which wouldn’t aggravate his skin.

We tried several different dry dog foods, such as IAMS, as well as one from the Purina Company, which included lots of vegetables. Though Sidney ate these dog foods and seemed to enjoy them well enough, his itchy skin became worse.

I started searching online for answers to his itchy skin, but it seemed like whatever we tried, either didn’t work at all or worked just a little.

Recently we went to a new store in our area that specializes in dog products. The owner was very friendly and knowledgeable, and she seemed to have some ideas for us about what might help relieve our Shih Tzu’s itchy skin.

The storeowner explained to us that Sidney’s itchy skin problem was most likely being made worse by what we were feeding him. She suggested that we try a dog food that Sidney hadn’t eaten before, which would give him a “clean slate”, so to speak, where his digestion was concerned.

As we looked at the dog food selection this store offered, the owner suggested that we try Nature’s Variety Prairie Wild Alaskan Salmon Meal & Brown Rice Medley dog food. Since Sidney had never had a salmon dog food, this would be a good option for him.

Because Sidney is so small, and since we didn’t know if he would like the dog food or not, we purchased the five-pound bag of Salmon Meal & Brown Rice Medley. This dog food is also available in fifteen-pound and thirty-pound bags.

We paid $10.49 for the five-pound bag, which we thought was quite reasonable.
