For years, during the height of the low fat diet craze, we were told to avoid nuts. Now it seems as if “they” are encouraging us to eat nuts once again. We never gave them up in the first place—we love nuts!

We used to buy nuts every so often, but my husband has changed his diet recently, and we’re buying nuts every week. He’s trying to eliminate sugar and white flour foods, which means many of our favorite desserts have been eliminated too. As a substitute, he has been eating more nuts than he did before.

Instead of a gooey dessert at night, my husband will have a dish of raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries, topped with a handful of mixed nuts, and a squirt of natural honey.

When he leaves the house in the morning, he often throws a generous handful of mixed nuts and raisins into a baggie and snacks on that mixture as he drives.

The other day I read a news item on Yahoo that mentioned walnuts being a possible new “super food” for health. I always keep a bag of walnuts on hand for baking. It’s good to know that they are now being touted as “good for us” once again.

Because of the good fats that nuts contain, it is now being suggested that we regularly include an ounce and a half of nuts in our diets. The fat in the nuts will help us to feel fuller longer, and there is some hint that nuts may also be protective against heart disease, though that has yet to be proven.

We’ve tried many brands of nuts. I don’t think there’s such a thing as a “bad brand” of nuts, but we have found a brand that has become our new favorite, Fisher Nuts.

So far, we’ve tried two of their nut selections: Fisher Deluxe Mixed Nuts without peanuts, and Fisher Fancy Pecans. We pay about five dollars for a can of Fisher Fancy Pecans, but it is well worth it. If there’s a can of those nuts in the house, you know that will be the first thing we grab. The can never lasts long.
