10) Significant Tax Breaks for Independent Contractors, the Most Common Work-from-Home Arrangement
Alright, who actually likes to pay tax? Let’s see a show of hands…anyone? I didn’t think so. As an Independent Contractor, I’m responsible for my own taxes. I get 100% of my paycheck and then I withhold a certain amount so I’ll be prepared for tax time. However, with deductions and things of that nature, many telecommuters find a nice present from good old Uncle Sam under their tax tree every year – a refund check! Yes, you heard me right. A lot of work-at-home moms/dads get refunds without even paying in one red cent of their hard earned money. I will add, however, that if you plan on becoming an Independent Contractor, you should consult a tax attorney before you even get your first paycheck. They will let you know what receipts to keep for deductions, and how much money you should put away just in case you’re one of the unlucky telecommuters that have to pay something.
9) Very Flexible Hours
This is a big plus for me. I was having trouble at my day job because I was a single mother, therefore I had to take the kids to all their appointments, be with them when they were sick and stay home with them if the babysitter was unavailable. Even the nicest of bosses gets a little annoyed when you come at them with yet another family emergency. Being an Independent Contractor, I can schedule my own hours, whenever I want. I can take time off for a family vacation and not have the dirty looks around the office because someone has to cover my time off.
