Five Kids at the Denver Zoo
Things to Do in Denver, Colorado
Both of my sons went to the zoo on field trips this year. One with kindergarten and one with first grade. When I said we would go this week they were very excited. My first grader mentioned that they hadn't made it to the primates. My fourth grader wanted to see the reptile house. After checking prices on line admission for myself and my five kids was equal to 1/2 of a family membership. Knowing that my 18 month old would restrict how much time we spent in the zoo and how far we got, I opted for the family membership. We have visited three times this week.
The first time we walked around the mongoose pen at the front gate and my three year old was enthralled. In addition there are peacocks roaming freely as well as geese. Every time we saw a peacock or a goose (usually with goslings) we had to stop and look. However, we did make it to the zebra's in a large open enclosure that my 18 month old could easily see. And the giraffes, the young ones loved the giraffes.
The zoo has been laid out in a manner that worked for all of my age groups. My toddler/preschoolers were happiest looking at animals such as the zebras, giraffes, elephants, great cats, hippos and rhinos all easy to see even for my 18 month old. The primates were also a huge hit. The elementary school kids loved the reptile house and we saw some snakes that even I hadn't seen before. There was a king cobra, huge snake! And some kind of viper with a very very large head. Several other vipers, cobras, rattlesnakes and many other snakes had the kids very impressed. The otters were wonderful as usual and there were polar bears and penguins, a wolf family eating, lions and leopards, a jaguar and cheetahs.
Especially exciting for our family were animals native to Colorado. Mountain goats and Sheep as well as Grizzly Bears were represented. And being spring, the zoo had lots of babies.
