The Today Sponge has disappeared from drugstore shelves for the second time, leaving users of the popular contraceptive device scratching their heads. The product's first removal from stores in 1994 was well-covered, even featuring on an episode of Seinfeld, when Elaine, short on supply, had to determine if a partner was "sponge-worthy." Users who preferred the Today method of birth control were thrilled when the product returned in 2005, but where is it now? Information on the product is sadly lacking, and prices are soaring as racketeers hoard the product and sell it for hugely inflated prices.

What is the Today Sponge?

Sponges are barrier contraceptive devices that block the flow of sperm, and also contain Nonoxynol-9, a spermicide. It works much like a disposable diaphragm, containing a loop for easy removal. The sponge has a low effectiveness rate when inserted incorrectly, but up to 99% effectiveness when used properly. According to my own gynecologist, women who can easily locate their cervix and have experience using diaphragms should have no more worries than with using other methods of birth control.

As the Today Sponge does not protect against STDs, it's not a recommended method of birth control for younger people or those with multiple partners, but is ideal for monogamous couples, especially among women with bad reactions to the Pill. The main reason the sponge has so many fans, though, is that one sponge is effective for twenty-four hours. It only has to be inserted once, and you're good to go until the next day, even with repeated acts of intercourse. Using one in advance of a date means being protected without having to interrupt anything, as the sponge can be used hours in advance. It's also unobtrusive, and can't usually be felt by your partner.

Why the First Disappearance?

The Canadian version of the Today Sponge, Protectaid (pictured in its protective case), has also disappeared from shelves. But why?

L.S.: The bankruptcy is mentioned in the article. It took me a while to dig up the information too. To those who asked: Protectaid is not available in the U.S.

Is the Protectaid sponge available in the U.S.?

I just did some research recently about the Today Sponge because it's my contraception of choice, and I found out that Alvogen just acquired today sponge assets and plan to put it back on the market. So that is good news. I'm sure we'll be seeing it again soon, so for those who love the today sponge, there is HOPE!

The Today sponge is currently off the market because the company that was making it filed for bankruptcy. I called the company to ask why there were no sponges to be found and it took me a long time of trying to get any answers. Just an FYI

Your "Did you know" is incorrect. The Protectaid sponge is a completely different sponge, it is not the Today sponge under another name. The Today sponge and Protectaid were both available in Canada at one time and now neither are. The Protectaid sponge is superior to Today in my opinion, and I've used both. Protectaid is a softer smaller sponge, which feels better for the man, and you don't have to wet it, it comes wet. I also found that I would sometimes get an allergic reaction to Today, but not to Protectaid.

I remember when the Elaine Benis character on "Seinfeld" struggled, in her own fanatically narcissistic way, to determine whether or not a man might be 'sponge worthy' when they were getting hard to find and she had only so many stockpiled. The more choices, the better!

Wow! What an interesting product!

Very well written article. You know my oldest daughter and friend both have a child while using the sponge the first time when it was removed. I don't think they tried it the second time around. This is important and great info for those who are in need of a birthcontrol that is not taken or injected into your body. Thanks

This was well-written and shows you have conducted excellent research. Wyeth's decision to cease production rather than upgrade does not surprise me one bit (it IS all about the money!) I must admit, I had no idea the sponge had such a rabid following ($100 for a 3 pack? WOW!)

A secondary market in birth control, very strange. Great reporting and sleuthwork.

This stinks for the ladies who were used to this product. Perhaps a current condom company could pick up the rights to the Today Sponge. Trojan would be a likely producer, and they could do a takeoff on their ancient armored soldier, maybe an Amazon or mythological goddess, as their spokescharacter. How about the slogan "We cover both sides of the story"? I'm almost willing to bet no other man will weigh in on this issue.
