In the article TRACFONE – Superb Pay-As-You-Go Cell Phone Service, the author has done a fine job of explaining the pay-as-you-go phones such as Tracfone. The referenced article points out the many benefits of this service vs. other cell phone opportunities you might consider. I have owned multiple Tracfones and have been a regular customer for a few years. In addition, I have enjoyed their website, their excellent technical support and their email reminder system for special offers. Special offers have included offers for bonus minutes when I next add purchased time, as well as some great price offers on refurbished cell phones.

There is a curious phenomenon that makes Tracfone use a little more interesting. Many Tracfone users start at the ‘emergency call only’ status. In that mode, you will only use the phone for real emergencies and the smallest amount of minutes will last for quite some time. If you deviate from that disciplined plan, however, you will find yourself on a slippery slope. Once you begin to enjoy the feel, the taste and the power of using the Tracfone for other purposes, you may very well become hooked. At first you can only think of one or two exceptions to the emergency rule, but that soon changes and the next thing you know, you are calling friends to chat.

Consistent use of a Tracfone has the potential to become expensive. Remember, purchase of the smallest card will give you one minute of call time for about 40 cents. At that rate things will get expensive, so we best come up with a different option.

With a Tracfone there are two issues that must be tracked to maintain your phone. The first is the number of minutes remaining on the phone (this is the same minutes we have been talking about), and the second is the limiting date of your Tracfone service. When your minutes are gone, you will not be able to make or receive calls. When the limiting date of service for the phone is passed, you will most likely loose your assigned phone number.

Takeaways
  • Emergency only use will always be economical.
  • Daily chit-chat use will get expensive, unless you purchase the max quantity card.
  • Take advantage of the one-year 'double minute' card from Tracfone
