This web site, Associated Content, offers two different options for writers who desire to submit content. Unfortunately, neither of these options truly allies the interests of both the site and the writers. A third option does exist which would be mutually beneficial and serve to increase both Associated Content's profits as well as the better writer's earning potential.

The first current option is to submit your article for up front payment plus a performance bonus piece based upon page views. The up front payment can vary and appears to be driven by some algorithm. Suffice to say, in the vast majority of instances, it is not a significant sum. This payment incurs risk to Associated Content. Should your page generate no revenue to them, then they are out this money. It is wasted expense. It is completely understandable why Associated Content would desire to be conservative in allocation of up front payment based solely upon estimates of future traffic and consequent advertising proceeds. Additional money can be made by the writer via the $1.50 per each 1000 view performance payment program.

The second option is to submit your article asking for the performance payment program while volitionally selecting not to receive any up front payment. Assuming that the article would qualify for up front payment, it would seem no logical writer would choose this option. Why give up money that is being offered to you? The article could be of limited shelf life thus requiring immediate publication which would be one possible justification. Associated Content generally will not make up front payments on very short shelf life topics, and the delay in processing for payment review could make your article moot by the time it is published.

Interesting proposal.

Such ideas have been suggested to AC many times by various people. So far these have not been implemented. The idea has merit, though the numbers would obviously need to be tweaked. However, the specifics of AC's compensation structure change from time to time so one needs to be careful when reading this piece. It is possible that a month from now, or a year, etc. AC's compensation structure will be changed and this article would no longer be valid. The PV bonus program, e.g., was started up not too long ago. A more general discussion, not depending on the specifics of AC would probably be more useful, as it could be adapted to other sites and other compensation structures. One of my articles addresses such issues, and may be of interest to readers of this article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/551937/web_publishers_and_their_authors_an.html?cat=3.
