Summer is here, and being a devoted sun worshiper who does not like to burn, I know a lot about sunblock lotions, especially the popular brand, Banana Boat. Two types of Banana Boat sunblock that I use on a regular basis are Banana Boat Sun Wear Daily Sunblock Lotion and Banana Boat Sport Sunblock Lotion. Based on my own experiences, both have equally good and bad qualities.

Both Banana Boat Sun Wear Daily and Banana Boat Sport have the patented ingredient AvoTriplex. AvoTriplex contains Avobenzone, which absorbs harmful UVA (ultraviolet rays that cause skin aging) and UVB (ultraviolet rays that cause skin to burn).

Banana Boat Sun Wear Daily Lotion is an oil-free lotion with a clean feeling that will not break down under the sun. It contains anti-aging ingredients to help keep the skin looking youthful, is dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, and water resistant. The active ingredients in this lotion are Avobenzone, three percent; Homosalate, 15 percent; Octisalate, five percent; Octocrylene 2.4 percent; and Oxybenzone, six percent.

The sweatproof and waterproof formula in Banana Boat Sport Lotion contains AvoTriplex, which makes this lotion very popular. It is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, contains a non-greasy formula, and retains SPF up to 80 minutes of water or sweating activity. The active ingredients in this lotion are Avobenzone, 1.5 percent; Homosalate, 15 percent; Octisalate, five percent; Octocrylene 1.25 percent; and Oxybenzone, six percent.

The application instructions on the tube for both of these products state that you should apply the lotion 15 minutes before sun exposure, reapplied at frequent intervals, after swimming, and towel drying.

Warnings are the same on both products:

Do not get the lotion in your eyes.

If a rash or irritation develops, stop use and seek medical help.

Keep out of the reach of children and contact the Poison Control Center if swallowed.
