Are you afraid of aging? Many are and billions of dollars are spent on methods of wiping away the years and weight loss. One such commercial gave me a "light bulb moment" recently. I don't even remember what the product was, but a man had lost significant weight and he said, "Now that I have lost the weight, I am a better person." Wow! That hit my consciousness really hard! So how much you weigh determines if you're a good person or not?

For years we have seen our obsession with the physical grow exponentially. Physical fitness - daily workouts, vitamins, organic food - and all the while our bodies keep ticking away in inevitable decline. Each decade brings a new mindset: invincible accompanies us until we turn 30. And then our eyesight diminishes, then the Snap, Crackle,Pop of our knees, and eventually, our minds go. But this applies to the physical, not the spiritual.

It is possible to get better with age! Paul said, "Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day." (2 Corinthians 4:16) I think it goes without belaboring that this is dependent upon our willingness to actively put on the mind of Christ consistently.

Man - and woman - are triune beings - a reflection of The Triune God. We are made in His image in this way. The physical is the least important, so it is at the bottom. Next comes the soul (emotions, will, and mind). At the top is our spiritual. And yet it seems most of the time people are trying to improve the body and the mind!

According to Marketdata Enterprises, the annual revenue for the diet industry was over $30 billion dollars way back in 1990. (It's much higher in 2008, yet our obesity rate keeps rising each year.) And that's just on weight loss! Who knows how much is spent on either products or procedures to look more youthful?

Takeaways
  • Aging physically is inevitable.
  • Aging spiritually is a choice.

Judy, I have heard so many people explain what was meant in Genesis: "Let US make man in our own image." Some people really get out there with their *opinions*!! Seems simple to me: we, like the Godhead are triune beings! An animal has the physical and the mental, but not the spirit. The Bible also says in Ephesians that we are God's "masterpiece". Boy, give one cause to pause, doesn't it?

Your article is so full of truth, April. I had not considered the fact that we as human beings are a triune being. That concept has really put all of our efforts in perspective. I, too, really want to improve my spirituality. Thanks for the nudge.

Linda and Jill, I find it interesting that in other cultures women are valued for their curves -- just like many of the famous paintings we value from ages past. Now every one wants to look like Barbie, and the media is pandering to a younger and younger crowd. Thank goodness Andy Griffith is still in reruns! ha!

Our American culture is so obsessed with youth and beauty and improving what's on the outside of us, when we should be more concerned about improving what's on the inside!

Vanity . . . what a concept. ;-)

Thank you for your comments! I have to agree with those that said they do not want to be "cared for" when they get really old. I know THAT feeling! The only ones I would trust would be my daughter (now living a long long way from me) and my best friends (all the same age or older than I am.) Sure don't want to be institutionalized. Guess I'm going to have to trust God will send the right person, right?

I guess in all honesty..I don't want to look "old" but....know that eventually, if we live long enough...we will all look old..I guess my main thing about becomming old..is the mind...want to always have one..:) ......

No, I'm not afraid of aging. I am afraid of becoming dependent on others when I get "really old," tho...LOL!

I can't say that I'm exactly afraid of getting older physically, but I've had a little trouble adjusting here and there - mostly because I've always been a hard worker and now things are starting to happen that gets in the way lol As far as aesthetics - I prefer health over looks. More than anything, I prefer to grow spiritually. Excellent article as always.

Thanks April. I'm turning forty in August, and this is a great reminder!

This is wonderful; I must say, I really am not afraid of aging, per se. My biggest hope and prayer is to stay fit (yes, physically AND spiritually) and to prevent disease as I get older. God has given me a healthy body and, for now, youth; it is my job now to be responsible and preserve what He has given me. Great work as always, April!

Tony and Charlene, thank you. I was blessed with "good genes" and do not look my age, either. For that I am grateful. But I'm also not spending money on weight loss or youth retention. I figure my time is best spent on aging spiritually. After all, I've already "ordered" a size 8 Heavenly Gown and an age of 30! Ha! (I just crack myself up sometimes!)

I don't want to look older, but not afraid of getting older. You have a great article April! So far at almost 58 I still look a lot younger than I am. My only give away is my gray eyebrows.. I have to pencil them in to look really young for my age now... but I don't care at all... the older I get the more seasoned I get... the more tender I become in the Lord.

I am not afraid either, April! Great article!
