In the news-Zyprexa for Alzheimer's related agitation ~

My CC (chief complaint) against Eli Lilly's Zyprexa is it has a TEN TIMES greater incident of causing type two diabetes.

As regards giving it to someone who is terminally ill with late stage Alzheimer's related agitation and aggression i have less of a problem.

I think (and it's just my opinion) that these 'anti-psychotics' are ineffective for many mental illnesses all they do for most patients is make you sleep so that your aggression is 'turned off'.

For some who have hallucinations they are effective. They gave it to me for PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and it had the paradoxical effect of making me worst, because you can't give anti-aggression drugs to patients who are hyper vigilant from PTSD.

Takeaways
  • 80% of zyprexa sales are 'off label' not FDA approved uses
  • Zyprexa worst offender for severe weight gain/diabetes
  • Zyprexa given to underweight patients for weight gain
Did You Know?
Most anti-psychotics work by making you so sleepy you become passive, they don't 'cure' anything

I was also on Zyprexa, strangely enough for PTSD. I gained 50 pounds. Good thing, though. I was anorexic when I first started taking it, claiming I was never hungry. Ha ha...on Zyprexa, I just couldn't deny that I was, indeed, HUNGRY!!! I am no longer on it (no longer anorexic)...and it was hellish to get off. There are hard-core withdrawal symptoms...sweating, shaking, vomitting and all that. But my doctor told me a way to taper off, and when I got off that way...things went fine. While being imperfect, it was an okay drug to be on. But, yes, the sleepiness became intrusive. Like always being on benedryl... was on it for 4-5 years. Haven't noticed any damage yet. Hope I never do.
