What is the World Of Warcraft? It's 'The Matrix' (v1.0) and a Great Metaphor for Freedom
What is the "World of Warcraft?" First -- it's the best, most engrossing, and most entertaining way to waste time in the 21st Century.
Second -- the "World of Warcraft" is version 1.0 of "The Matrix:" It's set in a "Lord of the Rings" type world. It's 3D real-time, real-life (i.e., human players who are "jacked in") and artificial intelligence (i.e., " the game" versus YOU) all rolled into one.
If you've never heard of "World of Warcraft" (where have you been?!), check out the World of Warcraft trailer here.
It's a MMORPG (a massively multiplayer online role-playing game). You can choose to be part of the Alliance (Azeroth) or the Horde (Kalimdor).
They are on the cusp of war, and insurgents (both human and A.I.) are making increasingly deeper and more bloody incursions into each other's territory. This, along with all the internal domestic issues, keeps everyone's hands full (i.e., completing quests).
It's a HUGE playing world - probably one of the biggest virtual worlds ever created.
What's remarkable is that it has gone beyond a "game" and is now one of the most realistic working real-time models of human interaction (with tasks & roles, of course, constrained by "The Matrix", i.e., Blizzard Entertainment, the architects of the game). Think I'm over-reaching? Consider what happened in the "game" in 2005 -- it is, to date, unprecedented:
"The Corrupted Blood plague incident was one of the first uncontrollable events to spread across all the servers [i.e., the machine hardware and software that supports the game]. Patch 1.7 saw the opening of Zul'Gurub, the game's first 20-player raid dungeon where players faced off against an ancient tribe of jungle trolls under the sway of the ancient Blood God, Hakkar the Soulflayer."
