Last month, May 2008, a well-dressed individual approached a uniformed NYPD officer standing on a corner in Fallujah, actually the officer would have been safer if he was, no, this officer was standing on a corner (solo patrol) in Brooklyn North (far from Kansas).

The dapper individual handed the police officer two flyers. The flyers are part of a campaign waged against police officers by a NYC based group. The goal is for one agitator to anger (hook) the officer while a second cretin, secreted in the shadows, films the encounter. The professional agitators are hoping to hit pay dirt and parlay the film into a paycheck. This is similar to what the Sharptons of the world do, except that these particular groups attempt to create and manipulate an incident out of thin air, rather than exploit and manipulate an incident that already occurred. This is easier than getting a real job. The hours are good, you can wake up whenever you want, heck sleep the day away if you wish. When the skell wakes up and ambles into the street, he will definitely find a hard working American in uniform, protecting the very neighborhood that schemes his downfall.

Great piece! It sickens me that Mr. Ayers is praised so highly by my School of Education.

This is excellent reporting. Horrifying to think of people scamming the police like this. What is scarier is the Obama news.

Hi - thought I'd left comment earlier - but I guess not. Great work, especially your remark about the "Sharptons" of the world. Where is Al Sharpton now? He's been kind of quiet. Could it be that, if Obama gets elected, he will be out of a job stirring up the race card?!

How terrible! Just one more thing NY officers have to deal with!

I guess they will have to change the slogan from "To Protect & Serve" to "Protect, Serve, Be Scapegoat"

Wow! I can't believe all of this! I knew there were cons who 'cause car accidents on unsuspecting victims so they can sue. But to stage acts such as these on officers is totally disgusting! Yes, I do agree there are crooked, power-hungry officers out there. But, to do this to officers who are devoted to protecting us and trying to clean up the crime, it's absurd. It also scares the wits out of me that whenever I read about Obama's affiliation with terrorism, crime, etc....it makes me wonder about what's ahead for us all. Great reporting Tony!!!!

You know, what you wrote just underlines the shift in mentality that we have undergone. In the past the understanding was that you worked hard and had a fair shot at making something out of yourself. And if you didn't, you moved heaven and the other place to set up your kids for success so they would have it better than you. Now it is a "forget about work" and "hand me that quick check" mentality that has people cheating the system mercilessly for any handout known to man. Having agitators trying to pick fights with the cops is just icing on the cake. Cops are called names all the time, but man, when your house is being burgled, who are you gonna call? Then, when you have someone people stepping up and saying it is time to take responsbility for oneself again, they're called racist and worse. ... This is a great article and I really appreciate your writing it. ... Okay, I'm stepping off my soap box now.

As if the NYPD doesn't have enough to deal with...I hope they implement stiff criminal penalties to discourage this -- on the surface it seems like it would fall under the umbrella of homeland security laws...wasted resources etc. Thanks for bringing this to light...as for the rest it seems like the racial divide is worsening not improving...it's sad because we have so many big issues that affect us all...as Americans.

This is disgusting. I have been through this myself (although I am not a cop). Someone starts shit with you until you explode and hit them, and then it's YOUR fault! I have since learned not to rise to the bait! I'll admit, I have never been been a fan of the police as a youth; harassment was a WAY OF LIFE in my old neighborhood. I have since grown to respect most of them as individuals, especially after taking Isshin-Ryu training with several of them. I do still believe some police officers abuse their power, and still run into the occasional apathetic one. While police brutality is despicable, setting up an innocent cop into a fight so it can be filmed for the purpose of misrepresenting the incident and making him look like one of Rohm's Brown-shirts is equally appalling. Maybe after one of these pieces of human garbage gets their heads cracked open real good, then others might think a little harder before trying stunts like this!

Horrifying. Nice article Tony. Left and right wing groups can be a real menace to police. Video cameras, YouTube etc. are interesting tools that can have a lot of negative consequences.
