You know, as soon as I put this out I fully expect some dunder-headed neo-con to take up the same call, saying rising unemployment numbers last month were caused by teenagers seeking summer jobs. I know you are out there - so convinced that your man George can do no wrong that you will fall right in line with his idiotic logic that he wants to sell you.

It's important to remember that new job entrants go into the job market all the time. Without a level of growth not even the status quo will me maintained. If that level isn't met, you have job loss. If you stop your "logic" there, maybe you could, if you suspend reality enough, draw the same conclusion. Of course, there are too many problems with this line of reasoning to even consider it.

The unemployment numbers are already rigged to be lower than the actual levels. Unemployment figures are only reported for those listed with unemployment services and receiving benefits, or "jobless claims." Those whose claims have expired or who have suspended their job search aren't counted. Neither is anyone who has had to settle for less hours or lower pay. It's safe to assume the real rate to be substantially higher.

The real joke comes when Bush tries to blame teenagers entering the summer job market. If they are just entering, they can't be counted as unemployed. Even if they don't find a job all summer they won't be added to the number of unemployed as defined. The only way a teenager entering the summer job market could bring a rise to jobless calculations is if they forced another employee to get laid off so they could have that summer job. Nice try, Mr. Bush.

The Bush Administration continues to put out propaganda aimed at anyone dumb enough to buy it. The problem for them is that more people are waking up to just how badly they have been lied to and mislead. Stop listening, people. Deficit spending, bad fiscal policy, bad trade policy, bad energy policy - those are some of the real reasons for the bad job market. Of all the very bad qualities George Bush demonstrates on a regular basis, his absolute inability to recognize his mistakes is among the worst.

Did You Know?
Those damn teenagers! Ruining the job market!

Fuck the president...I hope he dies soon...old age will probably off him...or Cheney will is my guess. Anyway, he can burn in the proverbially hell he is creating for himself, when this shit-war caves, and revolution comes knocking on his door ready to string him up >:]

Propaganda is politics. It happens equally on both sides, Democrats and Republicans. It is the nature of politics.

Another situation that throws off the unemployement numbers: I was faced with the option of being laid off or accepting early retirement. I took early retirement because it came with an enhanced severence package. I was far too young to retire permanently (nor could I afford it) and immediately began looking for a new job--a process that took 2 1/2 years. During that time I was unemployed, but because I had "retired," I was not part of the unemployment statistics. More and more we are seeing early retirement offers to people barely over 50 and far too young to stay retired.

Jeff: Great article. Blaming teenagers, Bushs' malignancy knows no bottom. Carol: I dont think you understand how the job market or unemployment figures work. There is ZERO correlation between high unemployment and students looking for summer employment.

Bush is the most patriotic and intelligent president we ever had. That is why he is so unpopular. Wait until the liberal candidate wins the election. He will give us sweet talk combined with charisma and nothing else.

Never would I defend that man or his reasoning, but it is conceivable that a person's status in the unemployment stats remains stable rather than improving because a teen gets the job he might otherwise have gotten (and thus gotten out of the stats) -if this reasoning applied to enough situations, the overall unemployment #s could rise rather than remain stable because of other people losing jobs. But such reasoning relies on dubious assumptions such as that the summer and regular job markets provide jobs to the same pool of job seekers.

It's a joke all right, but I find it hard to laugh. Well done article.

With each passing day it becomes more dreadfully and pathetically obvious that tens of millions of Americans entrusted the stewardship of this country to a man with a serious mental disorder. Anybody else exhibiting such acute symptoms of delusional behaviour would have been fired from their job if not institutionalized. Too bad we are also stuck with the acutely wimpy Nancy Pelosi.

Well spoken Jeff. It is a sad, sad joke, isn't it?
