An event occurs in 2009, which will create tremendous Internet buzz all over - the reappearance of the legendary Star Trek in theaters around the world.

Despite the most informed projections based on the best possible data, a preview into what will be hot in a year remains mostly guesswork. Of course, not every movie has the history of Star Trek. Coming in May 2009, and lasting all summer, the big budget movie bodes well to be a humongous blockbuster.

Star Trek directed by J.J. Abrams (ABC's LOST) from Paramount Pictures is the eleventh film in the series. It's an event for several important reasons. First and foremost, it's part of a unique legacy - now running over 42 years. This entertainment icon has succeeded on each continent in every way, including: TV, novels, video games, theme parks, toys and more. However it's not another voyage - it's a prequel.

It hearkens back to 1999 when George Lucas released Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It tells a tale of a young Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), much like Phantom Menace geared global audiences up to see a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker - who became Darth Vader. With Star Trek, a similar global celebration forms, as anticipation builds on the Internet.

When Star Trek opens it will have little competition, being released one week after "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." What's the buzz on these films now? Google results: X-Men: Wolverine: 565,000 to Star Trek XI: 1,700,000

Sorry, Wolverine, you don't even cut close with your claws. Eagerness over Star Trek is three times as bright and loud as Wolverine's flick. What's most thrilling and contributes most to Internet search is the cast. Unlike Wolverine's solo X-Men effort, Star Trek has a large cast of new young actors like Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock, but also household names like Winona Ryder.

Google Search: Star Trek Cast

Chris Pine 861,000 - Zachary Quinto 729,000

Leonard Nimoy 1,690,000 - Winona Ryder 4,160,000

Eric Bana 2,350,000 - John Cho 1,350,000

Star Trek: 51,800,000, Star Trek Movie: 931,000

  • J.J. Abrams directs Star Trek.
Did You Know?
Star Trek's main competition in summer of 2009 is X-Men: Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman, but the Internet is talking about J.J. Abram's Star Trek film about three times as much.

I'm looking forward to this...nice slant with the Google research. Though I can't see a real substitute for Spock. Great write up!

I'm obviously looking forward to the film but I have to say that I also worry that he might destroy some of the characters. I hope not. As a true fan, that would really tick me off.
