With gas prices continuing to rise and the world oil situation worsening by the day, it would seem that people are helpless to confront the energy crisis head on. But nothing could be further from the truth. It is the actions of millions of individuals spread out all over this country and the world that are contributing to the problem. If the actions of those millions substantially change, then the likelihood increases that the problem will, eventually, be overcome. For my part, I've added a partial list of actions individuals can take to fight high gas prices and to help overcome the larger energy crisis threatening the livelihoods of many in this country and across the world. Walk or ride the bike
A crisis in fuel is also a crisis in consumption. If we use less of a scarce commodity we are helping to solve the problem. Taking a look at local stores in your area, the distance to your place of work, and the distance to friends and family may give you an idea which of these are within range of walking or biking. For a normal, healthy, person walking a distance of up to a half mile should be no problem at all. Similarly, biking up to five miles is reasonable. If you plan to walk or bike to the grocery store, make sure you invest in a nice large backpack to put your goods in once you purchase them. If you bike to work, you may want to consider changing in and out of your work clothes or even showering at the office if an office shower is available. Walking and biking have additional health benefits as well helping you keep fit and adding some beneficial exercise to your daily routine.
