Many of us strive to eat healthy, cutting down on junk food and fast food. But as hard as we may try, sometimes the lure of fast food is a calling that we simply cannot resist. Our minds may say no, but our stomachs scream "Yes!" and before we know it, we're happily munching a large order of fries and a greasy burger with all the trimmings. We may feel guilty afterwards, but for now, it sure tastes good, doesn't it?

There are ways to still enjoy the occasional helping of fast food while still eating healthily. Of course, common sense will tell us that we cannot eat healthy and eat fast food at the same time, but with a few tips and modifications to our fast food choices, we can at least eliminate much of the harmful fats, cholesterol, overabundance of sodium, and other unhealthy aspects of fast food while still enjoying that savory fast food taste.

Firstly, when ordering a complete meal option, avoid overindulging. Many of us are at our weakest point when succumbing to the lure of fast food, thinking we are hungrier than we really are, and so we often choose the largest meal option. We also consume fast food quickly, before our stomachs have had the chance to tell us we have eaten enough. A regular-sized portion of food is more than adequate, and your belly will thank you for it, not to mention your overall health.

Burgers are traditionally the most common fast food item sold, with perhaps the exception of french fries. The burger itself isn't necessarily the worst item to be eating, but the addition of toppings and sauces can add substantially to the health risks and high caloric intake associated with fast food. When ordering a burger, try to avoid special sauces, mayonnaise, and even cheese. This will help to greatly reduce the amount of total saturated fat contained within the burger.

If you can manage to resist the burger and have opted for the salad, be sure to ask for low fat or fat free salad dressings, or eat it plain. A well made salad can be tasty even without salad dressing. If you must have a salad dressing, you can also opt for oil & vinegar, a better alternative to other dressings.
