How to De-Skunk Your Dog in 20 Minutes: An Effective Quick, Easy, and Inexpensive Home Remedy

Ok so your dog has come back from a romp, but what is that smell? Enough to make the average person vomit for sure, skunk has to be one of the rankest natural smells I know of. We currently have three dogs, so unfortunately we are familiar with the skunk dilemma.

First, do not let your dog in the house, if he/she rolls on the carpet or jumps on the couch it is extremely difficult to get the smell out depending on the type of fabric. It is better to tie your dog up
outside while you mix up the remedy. They are just as uncomfortable with the smell as you are, and they desperately want to get it off of them. Oddly enough, my dogs seem to forget about this part and still chase skunks. *sigh*

The solution is actually pretty easy, and this defiantly works. I can't count how many times I have used this to alleviate that awful smell and de-skunk my dogs. The best part is most people have the 3 items you need right in their medicine cabinet.

You will need two large bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide, two tablespoons of any type of dish liquid, and two pairs of rubber gloves. For smaller dogs you can use one bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide and one Tablespoon of dish liquid, however, you still need two pairs of gloves. Mix the solution in an easy to pour container. I cross tie my dog to the railings on the deck, using two collars and two leashes, one to each side. This keeps them in one spot so it is easier to apply the mixture without chasing them all over the place. It is much the same as tying off a horse for brushing and saddling, just make sure the leashes are tied short enough to prevent tangling, and long enough for your pet to be comfortable.

Put on your rubber gloves and start applying the mixture like you were shampooing your hair. Be careful and avoid the face, eyes, mouth, nose and any open wounds your pet may have. Not only will this cause irritation, it could hurt your dog, Avoid anywhere you would not want peroxide on your body, that is a pretty safe rule of thumb for application purposes. Lather the mixture well on his/her coat.

At 5 a.m. this morning, I let my pit out to do her business and I got a surprize of my life, she got sprayed. What did I do?? The mean mom I am closed the door on her. I couldn't help it. It smelled sooooo bad. I got dressed, (didn't think the paperboy needed to see me in my pj's) and I got on the net and to see how to get rid of this. Everyone in my house was up and saying "ewwww" but didn't offer to help. I used this remedy and for the most part she smells better, but I guess time will help. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, the chemical reaction will only take place if you use the baking soda with the hydrogen peroxide. We live on a farm and our two dachschunds are notorious for wrangling with skunks. This is the only remedy I've found that works. I keep hydrogen peroxide all the time just for this purpose. SOMETHING ELSE! Make sure your hydrogen peroxide is fresh. If you've stored it under the sink for three years or something, it actually changes for h202 to h20....water. It should be fresh in order to work.

There is one missing ingredient, baking soda. You need the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to react to break the skunk oil down. We use 1 qt hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda, and two table spoons of dish soap. You have to be fairly quick about getting the mixture rubbed on the dog after you make it. You have to let is stay on their coat for 5-10 minutes then rinse. Hope you never have to to this.

This is great to know. I have a blonde lab mix and I'm just waiting for the day when she crosses a skunk. This sounds more appealing and more effective than any other remedy I've seen.
