Rescind Health Insurance for Congress!

Make Them Pay for Their Own Health Insurance and Get Their Bill Off Our Backs!

With all the mud-slinging being thrown around, and election day less than a week away, I'd like to propose an idea that may separate the men (or women) from the boys (or girls).  Instead of the American taxpayer sholdering the burden of
health insurance for all members of our Legislature, why don't we put the onus on their backs?  Let's find out who really wants to be a 'public servant' at their own expense!  No more fat expense accounts, free health insurance, or pensions.  A living wage, yes, but the other perks should be done away with, permanently.

Without lifetime pensions and healthcare, how many of our leaders would aspire to a career in politics?  When our Constitution was drafted by the Founding Fathers, they never anticipated professional politicians, only public servants who would volunteer time to their country because that was the honorable and right thing to do...

Honorable?  When has anyone in the last twenty five years associated the word honor with a politician (or lawyer, but that's another article).  It's time the American public stood up and said no more!  With over 40 million of us without health insurance, the Medicare and Medicaid systems going broke, and over 60% of hard working Americans functioning without the golden parachute called a pension, it's time we yanked the parachute out from under our leaders!

Has there ever been a study showing what these perks cost the American people?  Has the press ever made it a headline to tell us how much Congress actually costs the taxpayers in terms of healthcare, pensions, expense accounts, limosines, etc.  No, but Congress has voted to study the mating habits of the tse tse fly, and other inane, ridiculous things.  Let's get back to basic, common sense America!

80% pension after only 8 years sounds pretty good especially to those of us who have none.

I say let them have Cobra, they pay for it of course. That's what they passed for American's who lost their jobs. Cobra costs about $1,200/Mo for family of 3. Let's put our servants on the program they sent to us.

Congress should be required to buy their on health care on the open market like eveyone else. How else will they ever be aware of or be willing to change the health care mess in this country.

Congress is a huge paycut for most of these people. If the people that are doing it do such a bad job, imagine what the less qualified people would do with the positions.

Congressional members may, infact participate in the civilian health benefits plan. However, do they automatically, at Medicare age, have to go on Medicare, like the rest of us? I don't think so..............................

This article is fundamentally not true. Members of Congress participate in the exact same health benefits plan that all other full-time civilian employees of the federal government do, the Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan. They do not get "free health insurance", they pay the same amount as any other federal employee. Once they leave Congress, they do not receive any form of health insurance beyond the Medicare available to all retirees. Similarly, Congress participates in the same pension plan that all federal employees participate in, the Federal Employees' Retirement System (that federal government and their wacky names). They can receive at maximum 80% of their final salary in Congress after five years of service if they are over 62, or after twenty-five years if under 62. Like all government plans, it is easy to find information about it: http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30631.pdf. That reference even tells you exactly how much is spent on pensions per y

Congress has its oun free health care insurence for life, yet they deny the sme benifits for the rest of us unless we are able to purchase it, sometimes for the same cost as a house payment, or more likely, rent. Shame on them.
