War Protests and Coolness

“It wasn’t very hip.” That’s why one well known liberal says she didn’t protest when Bill Clinton sent troops all over the planet, but she complains constantly about the Iraq war. That’s an answer that should embarrass an adult, but it didn’t seem to bother Janeane Garafalo in a TV interview with Tony Snow. She then revised her response to say that she actually did protest, just not out loud.

"I absolutely did. I did not support Operation Desert Fox. It's just that you didn't know me very well back then. Nobody really was interested in listening to me back then." Then she added, "It wasn't very hip." But now a Republican is in office so... now it is hip? Never mind that the troops themselves say it demoralizes them to hear the protests. And never mind that there is plenty of historical and current evidence that domestic protests embolden the enemy. All that matters is being cool. Look at the endless line up of celebrities who, when given a microphone to entertain us, instead ram their hatred of Bush and Republicans down our throats. Then they whine when we refuse to watch their movies or buy their music. But the important thing is, they’re cool.

I saw a recent live broadcast of a war protest in New York, where a bunch of people marched in the streets, chanting “stop warfare now.” They held signs saying the same thing. One reporter held a microphone up to the lips of one young woman, chosen at random. The woman was clearly heard to be saying “stop welfare now.” She didn’t even know why they were there protesting. But protesting was cool... so she joined in.

What Motivates Liberal Democrats?

If it's liberal, it must be cool.

Takeaways
  • Popularity is at the top of liberals' priority list.
  • Free speech is critical to liberals as long as the speaker agrees with them.
  • Most of the media loves liberals and manipulates you to show them in the best light possible.
Did You Know?
In spite of the Democrats popular claim that ANWR is a "pristine wilderness" it isn't, and calling it that doesn't turn a barren land into a shangrila. Since the Alaskan pipeline was created the population of porcupine caribou that live near it has continued to grow because of the warmth provided by the pipe. The population of herds that are not near the pipeline have declined significantly. http://www.anwr.org/features/pdfs/caribou-facts.pdf

Also: Wal-Mart associates - both full and part time - can become eligible for health care for as little as $11 per month in some areas.

Back to the question of your article..what motivates liberal Democrats? Let's begin with a critical thinking process that isn't completely devoid of reason....and go to asking that our leadership be responsible..that we take care of our planet and protect the rights of all, not just those who agree with us...so, to be on message....we think!

Also Angelfire, in the tax evasion article you are talking about, the comments that you are referring to were not written by a liberal. That person was no doubt a libertarian or objectivist type reader. So basically that was a terrible example.

Angelfire, you come out of nowhere and take a direct jab at me and now you are playing the victim???? All I meant by "you don't want to call me out", is that you wouldn't be able to keep up with me in a debate in your wildest dreams, so you would be better off not antagonizing me without provocation. What's with you guys and the intimidation thing? If you can't take strong criticism of your work, don't bither writing. If people are making inappropriate comments, or scaring you, block them from commenting or complain to administration. Geez, I thought you cons were supposed to be big tough guys?

Please don't call me out Angelfire--it would be a big mistake. Keep your comments on topic.

Donna, Sharon,Daniel and Gina- VERY right on, all of you! Great job Rond for another wonderful piece. The truth hurts but oh well, they will eventually have to grow up (we hope).

WOW!!! You guys certainly are on message these days. Gina, your last comment is ver, very similar to the rhetoric of one Rond Drew, and LIBERAL IS NOT A PARTY. Daniel--you are ignoring teh fact that the Iraq occupation and invasion is based on well documented lies and exagerrations. This country has seen its most prosperous days as a result of liberalism, if you want to deny that, there is no hope for you.

Excellent article. Liberals stand for nothing and go around trying to silence anyone with a different opinion. Then they claim to be the party of tolerance. Look at the libs who write in on this Web site for example. I've heard they even start false rumors about the conservatives to try to silence them...then they whine that conservatives try to silence the libs. Could this be why liberals throw food and slash tires? My hope is that someday they will grow up.

Donna Schoenrock, You are SOOO ON it!! I hear far more graphic and detailed accounts of all manner of aggressive anger and hatred from the libs than I "ever" have from anyone who simply believes that the time to do nothing has passed. Honestly, the libs and their flag bearers scare me far more than the Muslim Marginals and Terrorists.

Oh, Maaaan! When you begin nailing the wood to the foundation you indeed do so with rocket-like motive. Let me help you with catchy phrases to ad something to your cool factor. To be anti-war is not a position. It is an emotion. Any sane person is anti-war. That is what politicians are supposed to do-and libs too. When they fail the result is called "war". I know, Jeff, and you others...Also, To not fight a war that 'will' be fought is not peace. It is called quitting. We did that. For years!! It did not work. Civilians are dead in the thousands from our good lib ways. Thanks. I would rather fight for decades on my feet than lay prostrate before a terrorist in an ambush attack. If all I can do is fight, then on your behalf, Libs, I shall do so. For if I do not your message of peace will die in the hands of my opponents-who are yours by the way... Peace Love an' E'er'one no shoes.

Way to trivialize legitimate concerns over issues of war and peace, as well those regarding Wal-marts business practices--Bravo! So, according to "conservatives" like yourself, legitimate problems are just fads or figments of our imaginations-- You've convinced me that I and millions of other Americans are just being childish--Iraq is great despite our lying eyes & ears; Wal-mart is a fabulous place to work and shop even though it is our largest private employer that exploits workers, offers low wages and inadequate benefits; theres no Global Warming even though virtually the entire scientific community agrees about it, etc, etc. Mr. Drew, you sir are out of touch with TRUE American values

You hit the nail on the head! Good article.

I'm always amiazed at how Americans wrap themselves in their flag when dealing with international issues and then tie themselves uo in knots with Dem vs. Rep or Lib. vs. Con. on the national stage. Thinking on a individual level seems to be very suppressed in the frustrated states and group think seems to be carrying the day. It's a sad day for the land of the free and the home of the brave.

liberal republicans, conservative democrats

The most truthful statement in your article is when you state "I've rambled on." Indeed, you have. But I suppose if it takes being cool to stand up for what is right, and for a better tommorrow, a more equitable society, etc...then color me cool!

Posted on 11/02/2006 at 9:11:00 PM

Yes, you're absolutely right. Half the country (including half its Christians) are left-wing because they've been duped into thinking it's hip. There's no real reason to think Wal-Mart is doing any harm, even though the data and history tell us otherwise. Bush - augh - he's really a great President caught on the losing side of a popularity contest. Iraq, Katrina, accelterating debt, corruption - these things mean nothing. You, sir, have FINALLY hit the nail on the head. All those other real-life socioeconomic factors don't matter, it's this made-up "coolness." But hey, Miss Garafalo said it, so it MUST be true!
