Crotchet Mountain does have a ski area that furnishes recreation during the winter months. But for many New Englanders when you say Crotchet Mountain they bring to mind an entirely different image. To those of us who have lived in this part of the country during the last 50 years, Crotchet Mountain means a wonderful almost miraculous facility and foundation that seeks to aid those among us who are severely challenged by their disabilities.

History. An important family name in New Hampshire is associated with the founding of Crotched Mountain . It was Harry Gregg, father of the former governor of New Hampshire and grandfather of U. S. Senator from New Hampshire, who made his mark and a huge imprint on the state and the region by establishing "Crotched Mountain". Gregg had shown an early interest in helping disadvantaged children first organizing a summer camp for needy kids and later co -founding the New Hampshire Society for Crippled Children. He responded to encouragement from New Englanders to take his work further and established a rehabilitation center and hospital for the disabled on Crotched Mountain

The Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center opened for the first time in 1953. Since that time Crotched Mountain has adapted its staff and its offerings to meet the ever changing needs of the disabled. Over the course of its history it has concentrated its efforts on a variety of debilitating illnesses and conditions such as polio, cerebral palsy and hearing impairment. As the site at http://www.crotchedmountain.org will tell you, at Crotched Mountain they employ some 900 people working to help "vulnerable population" in New Hampshire and New England. Beginning with early childhood care to case management for those at the other end of the life Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center serve some 2,000 people with warmth and human understanding during the year.
