Reviewing Clairol Natural Instincts Semi-permanent Hair Color

Trying to Eliminate Gray Hair

I am getting along in age now, and the gray roots are starting to become too numerous for my comfort level. In the past, I have used henna to color my hair. My hair has always been a natural auburn color, so henna was a perfect choice for a little oomph every once in awhile. The problem
is that henna doesn't cover gray hair very well. Because of henna's limitations, I have been shopping for a new type of haircoloring to hide those awful gray strands. And I wanted to do it myself, because I am just too cheap to pay for a salon treatment.

I have used other permanent hair color products before. But I decided against permanent hair coloring because I always hate that skunk look when your roots start to grow out. My hair grows pretty quickly, so I didn't want to be messing with coloring my hair every three or four weeks. I also was afraid of the damage it may cause if I used permanent hair coloring that often.

My other two choices were temporary and semi-permanent hair coloring.

Temporary hair color coats the hair shaft and washes out in 1 - 3 shampoos. There are different formulas available for temporary hair color, but the most popular ones are either a rinse or a shampoo type.

The other type is somewhere in between permanent hair coloring and temporary hair coloring. Semi-permanent hair color doesn't just coat the hair like temporary hair coloring. It actually penetrates the hair shaft, similar to the way a permanent hair color does, just not as deeply. They last about 20 - 30 shampoos. For me, that would last about six weeks.

I opted for the semi-permanent because it lasted for a reasonably long time, and the color is supposed to gradually fade away. This prevents the common 'skunk stripe' seen with permanent hair coloring.

Next I needed to find a semi-permanent hair color brand that would cover gray. I found "Clairol Natural Instincts". On the box, it claimed to cover up to 50 percent gray hair- looks like I found a winner.

Other reasons I chose Clairol Natural Instincts were the claims that it contained no ammonia, low peroxide, included an aloe weekly deep conditioner, and some of the hair color ingredients were aloe, chamomile, and ginseng.

I have used Natural Insticts for years, I have long, thick golden blonde hair. I died it lighter than normal last summer with permanent hair color. I used nat'instinct med and dark blonde and it was getting back to normal...then I used that honey stuff and it turned it Orange!! I tried the med/dark blnd both and it wouldn't take that orange stuff out and it wouldn't cover grey from new growth. I just used the perfect 10 med golden blnd 8G and it fixed it...Finally!! I stressed for 2 hrs on whether I should try it and I'm so glad I did. It is the perfect natural golden blonde I have been trying to get back too! Thank goodness! I recommend it 4 sure!

My hair is long, thick, medium brown and I want to try 110, Natural Light Auburn. This is my very first time. The package says it's permanent but it also says it lasts 8 weeks. What will my hair look like in 8 weeks. I don't understand what permanent means if it will only last 8 weeks. Thanks for your help.

I use natural instincts in the lightest blonde they have. My hair is naturally a blonde red that is getting darker. When I use it, everyone says how much they love the colour of my hair, with the blonde highlights. I love the results.

re:damage I've used Ion and a few other semi-permanents (not Clairol)... sometimes felt "rough" or w/e due to the dye coating my hair (still looked shiny), but after it washed out my hair returned to normal.

this is crap!!!!! 3 months ago i dyed my hair "Cinnaberry" (dark auburn) and it turned out just like i wanted it to. and then 2day i dyed my hair "coastal dune" (dark blonde)it is kinda close to my original hair color but a little lighter. Coastal dune did apsolutely nothing for my hair....my hair is the exact same color as it was right before i dyed it.....this product is crap i never want to use it again.........Natural Instincts sucks....

I've been coloring my hair for years. The best tips I've discovered are to have a designated shirt for just coloring. I have had the same old sweat shirt forever, I was past being acceptable for anything but grubby wear. I cut the sleeve's off to where they would be short enough to not get all wet & long enough to protect my skin form the color. I also have old towels I keep with the shirt just for hair coloring. I keep my "hair coloring kit" folded together in my bath cabinet ready for coloring day.

Does this color bleed at all?

Loved the Natural Instincts. I have dark brown hair and I use the dark brown in between trips to my hairdresser. It was not harsh on my hair at all. My grays come out as highlights. I have towels and a robe I use just for haircoloring and do it in the bathroom so if I drip on the floor its on the tiles. I always rinse off in the shower with my head down. I put Vaseline or moisturizer around my hairline to avoid staining my skin, and use a facial scrub at the end of my shower to remove any remaining stains.

This stuff is garbage. I used the shade called "Amber Shimmer", which is so light golden brown, it appears blonde. I last used it in 2006. When I first used it, I had bad scalp flaking and my hair was very rough; it still is. I've cut it shorter many times and still it's not out. It's been over 2 years and this stuff is still in my hair; I haven't been able to get it out. Hopefully I can grow it longer until the summer or fall of next year, then get the rest of it cut out. I'm so sick of dealing with this; I will never again use a Clairol product.
