Final Fantasy XII has arrived. And it’s about time. After five tortuous years of labor, the mother of all RPG publishers, Square Enix, has finally pumped out (in English, anyway) their latest and arguably greatest baby to much ado. Now non-Japanese-speaking geeks all over America can lead yet another bare-chested androgyne and his friends on a wild adventure to save the world. Or a world, at least.

But what have we been doing all these years since the release of Final Fantasy X? Besides playing World of Warcraft, that is. Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I dug deep into my collection of Squenix’s past offerings to dust off some old favorites. From true classics like the incomparable Chrono Trigger to more recent gems like Xenogears and Final Fantasy X-2, I’ve played ‘em all.

Unfortunately, five years is a long time. They told me so in school. So where did I go once I’d beaten Lavos for the 36th time in three days? I decided to get reacquainted with some of the RPG giant’s less enjoyable titles. With that, I bring you, in no particular order, Square’s five ugliest, lamest, most acne-ridden children (to continue the weak metaphor I started with—that’s synergy, baby!). All this list cost me was a few years of completely wasted free time.

1. Kingdom Hearts
I can only imagine the kind of concept meeting that went on the day somebody pitched this beauty: “Combine equal parts Disney movies, Final Fantasy characters, and Haley Joel Osment. How could it go wrong?” Everywhere. From the constant, insanely tedious platform jumping (and falling…and falling again…and again…) to the easily killed party members (Donald, I’m looking at you) whom you can’t control, Kingdom Hearts was a disaster from the get-go.

Takeaways
  • Even the best game publishers stumble into a dank basement of bad ideas sometimes.
  • You might love any or or all of these games. But that's wrong and you shouldn't.

Anyone who doesn't play at least 3/4 of an RPG and puts it on their 'worst' list can't really have their opinions accepted in a professional register. Please research and play more.

I stoped reading this after Kingdom Hearts was the first on the list. Frankly this is one of the few games where the party members help out more then they hender you. Heck, you can even change how much they help heal you and fight outher people for you. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/87946/kingdom_hearts_a_great_rpg.html My review of the kingdom hearts games.

Oh come on, you can't be serious in naming Kingdom Hearts one of the worst RPG's. I think it's one of the best. Ever. And even if it got alot of raised eyebrows at first, the combination of Disney and FF characters/concepts turned out to be genius too.

I think this is a sad review that uses pesimistic views on just about everything. Chrono Cross is a classic in my mind, there is no game like it on the market to my knowledge. A lot of games don't go into the emotional depth Chrono Cross did in many aspects. Just because you did bad on one boss doesn't make it a bad game. From what I heard, you played to the middle, what was your motive to play that long? Final Fantasy XI was a great MMORPG as well. I have never played WoW, and I hardly played Everquest, but through research I have found FFXI to be the most intellectual and unique game out of the other popular MMO's. Everything in the game, or almost everything, seemed perfect. From synthesis, the auction house system, skill chains, macros, and so on, everything seemed just right. Sure, you actually had to work towards something you wanted, like a new area, or sometimes a new weapon, new gear and more, but that's what made the game great as well. You actually felt like you accomplishe

Actually, I need to correct myself. Kingdom Hearts wasn't even developed by Square Enix, Square EA was still active at that time.

Xenosaga was developed by Monolift Soft and published by Namco - not Square Enix. And Chrono Cross is considered a classic, which cannot be sold short because you have a bad experience with a single short coming with a single boss. Angst and frustration should not effect a review if you want to go this far south. Also, Final Fantasy Legend (Actually apart of the SaGa series) was not published by the tandem that is square-enix, just square alone. In fact, only Kingdom Hearts and Crystal Chronicles, as mentioned on your list, are products of the merger. Please, Research more.
