Depression is an illness of the mind. A lot of people in the world are affected by it. Someone close to you is probably dealing with depression without your even knowing it. Since it is so common, the good news is that it can be cured easily.
A person suffers from depression because their brain’s neurotransmitters are not functioning properly. It is these neurotransmitters job to carry levels of nor adrenaline and serotonin throughout your body. There are a lot of reasons why these chemicals may malfunction, thus causing depression to occur. Some of the most common causes include verbal and mental abuse, bad feelings and mental expectations that cannot be met. Doctors believe that depression is actually a patient’s way of asking the people around them to treat them better. In some ways depression works to achieve this goal.
It is important to understand what nor adrenaline and serotonin are in order to understand depression. First of all, you should know that serotonin is a chemical that is found within your central nervous system. Serotonin’s job is to regulate your mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality and appetite On the other hand, nor adrenaline is a chemical that is released from the adrenal glands. It is part of the body’s fight-or-flight response which increases your heart rate, releases energy and increases muscle readiness. When these levels are too low a person becomes depressed.
Some forms of mild depression can be successfully treated with therapy. In these cases a therapist can help a person by being there to talk about their problems. Therapy may last for weeks, months, or even years before the patient is able to move past their depression and get on with their life.
