It is estimated that approximately 5%-10% of women have polycystic ovarian syndrome. This condition affects the production of female hormones as the ovaries do not operate properly. Instead of eggs developing and being released from a woman’s ovaries, the process is impaired. Some women develop cysts on their ovaries while some do not. With this condition, a woman experiences irregular menstrual cycles or an absence of menstrual cycles and there are high levels of male hormones in the body. The internet is a good source of information for those wanting to find out more about polycystic ovarian syndrome - including diagnosis, treatment and how fertility can be affected.

The Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association has an online website at http://www.pcosupport.org. This is a nonprofit organization operated by women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome in order to support others, provide education and information, and support treatment and research.

The U.S. Department of Human Services provides a website online called women health.gov that can be found at http://www.4woman.gov/faq/pcos.htm - this page features extensive information on polycystic ovarian syndrome, including a general overview, symptoms, tests and treatment. There is also a good visual aid in the form of a diagram of how a woman’s body is affected by this condition and several links to other online resources. There is a printer-friendly PDF file also available of the online information so a person can print it off for handy reference and easy reading.
