A mere 8 years ago, I was still a registered Republican. I had conservative social views and a strong belief in a smaller government. However, as time has passed, and my position has changed. I have seen nothing but cruelty and tragedy from the idea that promoting business will "trickle down" to the workers and help everyone prosper. Business tax cuts and deregulation have created a wider gap between the rich and the poor, slowly eroded the middle class, and created a greater need for what Republicans bitterly refer to as "entitlements." "Entitlements" wouldn't be necessary if the United States had a living wage for its workers and businesses actually shared the money they save from tax cuts. Instead they have kept their profits and moved jobs overseas to further increase their profits.

The pro-business tactics of the Bush Administration have created a sort of "caste system" where it has become more and more difficult for people to rise above their stations. War and wrongly-applied tax cuts have made the economy worse, not better. Where selfishness and greed create political policy, the people suffer.

John McCain will simply continue these policies, policies that have put us in a recession and ruined our relationship with foreign nations.

Here are some examples of John McCain's ideas that I simply cannot support.

1. John McCain's Healthcare Plan Will Leave More of Us Without Care and In Debt

McCain wants to eliminate tax credits for businesses that offer health plans to their employees and deregulate health insurance (Source Link).

His reasoning is that if people have to buy health insurance directly instead of their employers doing it for them, it will create competition that will lower health insurance costs.

He also says that different state's regulations prevent Americans from being able to shop around and buy the best plans with the best prices, and that insurance companies should not be required to obey the insurance laws of the state in which their customers reside.

Robert Gordon, writing for Slate Magazine, explains it this way:

I appreciate your comments but I'm a bit confused - where in my article did I write that it should easier for illegals to become citizens? I don't think I addressed that issue at all.

As far as your stance on making it easier for illegals to become citizens, you should go live in Phoenix or Tucson for 5-10 years - think you would feel a whole lot different.

McCain is dangerous, and as a former 45 year resident I should know. But Obama also hasn't a clue. As far as the insurance problem, there is no free markets in the country at all anymore - not since the Supreme Court errantly gave "corporate personhoods" to large corporations and Bill of Rights protections they were never intended to have. There is no free market - there are the Association of Realtors, Association of Insurers, Association of Home Builders, Bar Association, Medical Association, etc., etc. The worst are the "commercial" associations - and once the Court created another "person" as a party to the Constitution - it was and is Congress's job not only to regulate them, but to make sure these "bullies" don't gang up on the citizens. And I don't see saving $20 on a car or home insurance policy (which are mandated purchases with the banks and legislatures for decades also giving them priviliges and immunities not given the citizens), as a competitive market at all.
