Technically Speaking

The Truth and Nothing but the Truth

Am I in 'love' with technology ?

I don't think so. Let me tell you, I absolutely don't understand why people watch television. Why indulge yourself to too much technology ? Staying connected to people is so important. You also have to now what is happening in the world. That is why I check
my emails and read the newspaper on-line! If anybody tells you I love technology, don't believe that....and did that person take a Lie Detector Test? These days you shouldn't trust anybody without concrete evidence. Okay, let's do this, I'll tell you what a typical day for me is like and let you be the judge.

In the morning I get up with the help of an alarm clock, and use 'some' gadgets to prepare breakfast quick. It's not about my 'love' for technology, it's about time management. I exercise a little on my tread mill and take a shower with the hot water that is not heated in the sunlight !. Yes, I heard that my mother used to heat up water that way before giving us bath, but that seems so silly !

I put on clothes that comes back from the Cleaners. I purchase the matching shoes and accessories through on-line catalogs. On my way to work I drop off the children at school. In the car I listen to the music or the news. I don't forget to get coffee in Styrofoam cup at the drive through. I park at the parking lot where my card gets scanned at the gate. At office I take the elevator to save every single second I can so that I am not late punching in. You know how important it is to be ready to interact with people. I cannot stand people who are always late and stop and chat too much. You can socialize and still be on a timer, so to speak !

For the sake of my job I check my schedule on my laptop, answer the page, and talk to my patients over the phone, if needed. I also have to access WebMD and other PDR sites just for my patients. I could easily do that with the printed version only if we had that in the office. Who does the ordering at our office anyway? I think I'll have fire somebody to make a point, but then why I didn't think of that in the last 6 years?

Technology really jumped out with the Iran election protests. I started publishing articles on them 3 days before National Media because of Twitter. Great article. TY.

This was my first article of yours that I have read but I will be reading more. Just love your sense of humor. I think in technological terms these days... for example, when my husband forgets someone's name I remind him since I have become his external memory drive. When I am listen to a talk show on the radio and miss something that is said, my hand goes out to press the rewind button until I remember the radio show is not on Tivo.

Entertaining read, Pen. You say "Staying connected to people is so important. You also have to {k]now what is happening in the world." Actually, no. You don't need connection to "people," you need a reciprocal flow with certain people: family, (some) friends. You will never know what is happening through the media (see "What's News? The Numbers, The Words, and You," September 24, 07). You know the story about dropping the frog in a pot of cold water and then turning up the heat, right? It's time for all us frogs to leap out of the pot and kick the crap out of those who would boil away our minds and hearts (see "Dunes of Hypocrisy," May 10, 08). Your write is not 'silly'; it is your subconscious speaking to you...listen. Only the Best, Michael

Sorry about the typos : in the 4th line of the first paragraph...it should be "know" and not "now" ....... also missed a "to" at the bottom of the first page....

Ain't it all great? We have frequent power outages and I still panic and just sit there totally lost wondering how to function when my THINGS have no power!

LOL! What a unique read! It really got me thinking about our dependency on technology!
