Don't you wish all your co-workers could meet your dog and just see for themselves how wonderful he is?

You just might get your chance next week if your company participates in "Take Your Dog To Work Day".

Take Your Dog To Work Day was created by Pet Sitters International to promote the benefits of pet companionship, and to encourage pet adoption from local animal shelters.

Although the purpose of "Take Your Dog To Work Day" is well-meaning, spending the day at the office may be stressful for dogs and disruptive to workers and clients alike.

Concerns About Taking Your Dog To Work.

Will this be stressful for your dog? Does he do well with strangers? Does he do well with other dogs?

Is anyone in the office allergic to dogs? Is anyone afraid of dogs?

Where will the dog spend his day?

When will he go to the bathroom? Who will clean up after him? Can you leave your work for "Doggie bathroom breaks"?

Is your dog up to date on his shots? What if he bites someone? What if another dog bites him? Will you check to see all dogs had their rabies vaccinations?

If you work alone at your desk all day and your dog is quiet; a day at the office may be okay. If you work where people are in and out and your dog barks, will the barking be distracting to workers and clients.

If you decide to participate in "Take Your Dog To Work Day"

Make sure management approves

Dog proof your work space. Remove poisonous plants. Hide electrical cords and any office items that could be harmful.

Make sure your dog is healthy and his shots are up to date.

Don't bring a shy or aggressive dog to the office; participate by bringing in a photo. Blow it up to poster size.

Bring your own doggie bag: everything you will need for the day - food, bowls, treats, favorite toys, leash, paper towels and clean up bags.

If you are in and out of your workspace bring your dog's crate or a portable gate to confine him.

Plan for bathroom breaks. Get the area approved ahead of time.

Don't force co-workers to interact with your dog. Let the "dog lovers" come to you.

Monitor your pet's food. Don't let him be fed "people food". Chocolate, grapes, and candy should not be shared with dogs.

Cute pups! Rambo would love to go to work when I worked out of the house - he just loves attention. And since he gets fed people food anyway (less for chocolate, grapes, raisins and other toxics) he would just love that! Now, since I work from the house, he is under my feet all day. He will barely go out, so I have to take a break and bring him outside to get some exercise a couple of times a day :)

Our former boss used to bring his dog to work once in a while. The dog was well behaved, and sweet, but one of the women in the office is VERY allergic. And even when she wasn't there, she would feel sick if she came into the office after the dog had been there. It's too bad...loved having the dog visit!

Wow, I had no idea that this was such an awesome event. Since I'm the boss I'd definitely approve such a wonderful pet oriented day to happen at the shop!

I loved the article and read it once before but had to come back and look at that photo. It makes me smile. :)

I used to love it when I worked at a place where my parrot could sometimes accompany me. With proper planning, it shouldn't be a problem.

I didn't know this existed either. My dog is at work everyday since I work at home, and that's a good thing. I'm afraid he'd cause a little trouble. He's little but mighty and would bark and growl at everyone. He growls at a plastic bag blowing down the sidewalk! LOL Good article. :-)

My husband's place of employment used to allow dogs and then they stopped the policy, which is too bad because our little one never left his office anyway. What's funny is the new provost has dogs and lives on campus.

Wouldn't be a good idea with my dog. He is big and very energetic. Now my cat is lazy. She would be a better fit at work.

My dog would just sleep under my desk at my feet all day like she does here at home, I'm sure. I have a friend who takes here lab to work because she is a woman alone in the building about 75% of the time. That's not a good idea around here.
