Unexpected Moment

Went out to have my dinner tonight
You walked right past within my sight

I said hello and met your gaze
But, you walked by in an obvious haze

We go way back ten years or more
When you used to frequent my little store

You came to dine with a group of friends
I quietly listened as you discussed days end

I heard you say, "I'm just so tired"
"My cancers back and I'm just so tired"

I heard you cough and I wanted to cry
I wanted to say Oh, God, why?

I really wanted to talk with you
But, I knew my pain would show right through

Your friends were talking with a lot of cheer
I just couldn't interrupt, my dear

I quietly got up and left
Feeling sad and so bereft
